TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – The third round is over, and the Crimson Tide rolled. The University of Alabama women's basketball entered the WNIT contest one down, so to speak. This was the school that had defeated UA last season in the WNIT, and Bama was ready for some get-back. Tide junior Hannah Cook led four Alabama student-athletes in double figures with 18 points to help Bama roll over the Tulane Green Wave 72-64 in the third round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament on Thursday at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide (22-13) now advances to the quarterfinals for the second time in program history, and first time since it became a 64-team field. Alabama next travels to the state of Georgia to face the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Sunday, March 26th at 1 p.m. CT.

Alabama Crimson Tide women's head basketball coach Kristy Curry said, "I appreciate our community. What a great crowd on a Thursday night and we hope that everybody that was here will come back and see us in the future. We really appreciate them; so many coaches within the department, athletes and departmental personnel. It was great to see so many faces in the crowd, and again we really appreciate everyone's support. I'm really proud of our team for finding a way to win. Each one of them."

Also scoring in double figures were juniors Ashley Williams (15) and Quanetria Bolton (13) as well as freshman Jordan Lewis (13). Williams and sophomore Shaquera Wade pulled down a game-high eight rebounds apiece, while Lewis contributed a game-high six assists. Freshman Ashley Knight brought her season total blocks to 87 by adding three last night. Tulane was led by junior Kolby Morgan, pumping in a game-high 26 points, and senior Leslie Vorpahl, who added 10 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Curry commented, "We talked after the game about what we could take away and continue to learn from tonight, and I thought they had some great points. It was composure and little things as we went throughout each one. I thought that down the stretch, we had great composure against a very well coached Tulane team. My hats off to Leslie Vorpahl for a great career there, just an outstanding leader, you can tell. They are just a very well coached team and Lisa Stockton does a great job. We were fortunate to have a few more plays that we made."

The Crimson Tide was 23-of-47 (48.9 percent) from the floor while the Green Wave hit 25-of-58 (43.1 percent) on the evening. Alabama also outrebounded Tulane 39-27, and hit on 16-of-23 assists.

Alabama Men's Swimming & Diving Team

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – The Alabama men stepped it up on day two of the 2017 NCAA Men's Swimming & Diving Championships. The Crimson Tide jumped three places in the finals to finish in fifth place in the 200 freestyle relay at the IUPUI Natatorium Thursday.

UA freshman Zane Waddel was the leadoff man for the Tide with a time of 19.24. He was followed by junior Luke Kaliszak and sophomores Robert Howard and Laurent Bams. Bams finished for a time of 1:16.52, less than four-tenths of a second off the UA school record, and good for a fifth place finish.

Unfortunately, Bama was disqualified in the 400 medley relay competition for a turn violation in the preliminaries.

Crimson Tide head swimming & diving coach Dennis Pursley said, "We had our best swim of the meet so far in the prelims of 400 medley relay and it was disqualified on a stroke violation. To rub salt in the wound, we went back and watched the video of the race and we completely disagree with the call. We perused every avenue available to us in a situation like this, but to no avail. It's going to make our goal of a third straight top-10 finish much tougher to achieve."

Waddel later finished fifth in the individual 50 freestyle swim B final and 13th overall with a finish of 19.24. The youngster emerged from the preliminaries with the 16th and spot in finals and, like the 200 freestyle relay earlier in the night, moved up three places in finals.

Pursley said, "I'm proud of the way we responded. We moved up three places in both of swims tonight [Thursday]. We're just looking at it as from here on out, we've got a lot of swims and we're going to take them one at a time and try and climb back into the meet."

Alabama was on the scoreboard with 28 points. Following Waddell's swim, Alabama finished the second night of the championships in 14th place with 32 points.

Pursley continued, "We've got a big deficit to overcome, but if we swim up to our capabilities over the next couple of days, we feel like we have a chance to end up where we want to be. It's just a matter of taking advantage of the opportunities that we have."

The Crimson Tide is back at it today with swims in the 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly as well as the 200 medley relay. Prelims begin at 9 a.m. CT, while finals will begin tonight at 5 p.m. CT.

This year's A-Day contest is scheduled for April 22nd with a 2 p.m. CT start.
