TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - The Wednesday practice for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team was the last viewing period for the media prior to the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta, Georgia this coming Saturday.

The Bama boys methodically went through their drills, position workouts and pressed on in narrowing the focus of "football" to "FSU football." The Tide worked for approximately two hours yesterday in helmets, shoulder pads and shorts in the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility yesterday. Today's practice will be the last at The Capstone before departing for Atlanta tomorrow. Practice time today is set for 3:30 p.m. CT.

Though his leg is still wrapped, Bama running back Najee Harris was looking good in yesterday's practice and is at or near full speed. Josh Jacobs, however, still appeared to be limited in what he could do, or was allowed to do. Raekwon Davis was at practice and did some work yesterday. He appeared to be getting around well following this past weekend's injury to his leg due to a stray bullet.

In yesterday's press conference, Alabama head football coach Nick Saban talked a little about the injury situation. He did mention that if Jacobs didn't practice today (Thursday) then he would not see action on Saturday against the Seminoles. Davis is still considered "day-to-day," so it will more than likely be a Saturday decision on whether or not to play him. He remains a "medical decision." (View press conference below.)

The No. 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide will face off with the Florida State Seminoles this Saturday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium for the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game. The game is set for a 7 p.m. CT kickoff on ABC with Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Maria Taylor and Tom Rinaldi calling the game.

It's Finally Game Week; Nick Saban Press Conference; Saban & Tide Release Official Depth Chart; Taylor Morgan Honored; Raekwon Davis Update; Remembering Tom Jones Of UA

It's Finally Game Week!

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - It's finally here! The opening of the 2017 football season. It's the first game week of the year, and the Crimson Tide is now in full Florida State mode. University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban and a select group of players met with the media at noon on Monday, before the Bama boys put in a two-hour practice session in full pads at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility later in the afternoon.

Running back Josh Jacobs practiced yesterday, but is still somewhat hampered going through drills.
He is still listed day-to-day.

Defensive lineman Raekwon Davis wasn't present at practice. He is recovering from a gunshot wound to the right leg. He, too, is day-to-day.

Monday was the first of four practices before the No. 1 ranked Crimson Tide travels to Atlanta, Georgia to do battle with the Florida State Seminoles in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game on September 2nd. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. CT kickoff at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The game will be broadcast on the ABC network, with Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Maria Taylor and Tom Rinaldi calling the game.

Three more practices remain before the Tide winds its way to Atlanta on Friday. At that time Bama will have an opportunity to become acclimated with the venue with a walk-through, touring the facility and locker room.

Saban met with the media on Monday afternoon prior to the day's practice session. Here is a look at his opening statement:

"This (season-opening game) is a great opportunity for our team to play in a great environment, at a new stadium in Atlanta, against one of the top teams in the country. Florida State has a lot of returning starters on both sides of the ball, especially at skill positions, and their quarterback. They have 10 or 11 guys coming back on defense, which was one of the top defenses in the country a year ago. Both of these teams probably are going to be well-prepared to play this game. I know our guys have done a really good job in preparation for this game. We're pleased with the progress that we've been able to make with a lot of players. We've had a couple good days of work in Florida State prep, which we will continue today. Each player kind of knows what their job is and what their challenges are. Each player knows that the player that he's playing against is a really good player, and he's going to know his number too; that's what makes it a great challenge and a great opportunity for our team. This game is going to come down to who can play with the most discipline and execute for 60 minutes in the game – that's how a lot of first games are. Who's going to make the most mental errors? Who's going to take care of the ball the best? This is always the challenge in an opening game.

"With the Raekwon Davis situation, we're still gathering information. It doesn't seem like our players were guilty of anything other than being out late, which doesn't make me happy. He has been released from the hospital. He's here, and he's getting treatment. He'll be day-to-day, and we're still gathering information. What his status is moving forward will be a medical decision...not something that we can really comment on...here right now."

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Alabama freshman forward Taylor Morgan has been named the SEC Freshman Player of the Week. The announcement was made by the Southeastern Conference office on Monday afternoon. Taylor scored the game-winning goal to defeat No. 6/4 Florida State on Sunday.

Morgan helped lead the Crimson Tide to victory over Alabama head coach Wes Hart's former school. Hart has served as a Florida State assistant before joining Bama as head man. This is the first win over Florida State in the series between the two programs, and is only the second win for the Tide over an ACC school. It is also the first top-10 victory in program history.

Raekwon Davis Update

Photo taken from Bing.com

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - According to The Tuscaloosa News, Alabama defensive lineman Raekwon Davis has suffered what is termed "a minor gunshot injury" due to an incident in the parking lot of a Tuscaloosa bar on early Sunday morning. He also, reportedly, not only did not practice on Monday, but was not even at the practice session.

Davis was hospitalized with a leg injury he received from a stray bullet, but, according to investigators, he was not the target. The Tuscaloosa News also reported that "the victim was uncooperative with investigators."

Alabama football head coach Nick Saban said in a Monday press conference they continue to look at the situation. Saban said it appeared "non of our players were guilty of anything other than being out late." He further stated that the situation didn't make him happy, but that it "is what it is."

Davis has been released from the hospital, according to Saban, and is listed as "day-to-day." He also said "We are still gathering information, and what his status is moving forward will be a medical decision...not something we can really comment on here...right now."

The Crimson Tide will open the 2017 season this Saturday in Atlanta, Georgia against the Florida State Seminoles.

Bama Football Practice Continues; ESPN's College GameDay Says Bama Falls Short; Lee Corso Picks Noles Over Tide In Opener; Crimson Tide Volleyball Falls

Bama Football Practice Continues

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - It was another day of hard work as the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide practiced in preparation for the season-opening game this coming Saturday, September 2nd in Atlanta, Georgia with the Florida State Seminoles. Bama worked in shells on Saturday with the temperature in the mid-80s on the Thomas-Drew practice fields on the campus of the University of Alabama.

The Saturday practice session began at 3:30 p.m. CT, and the Tide's 21st of 25 total practices leading up to the first game, and was the last of the "fall camp." Official preparation for the 'Noles has begun to ready the Crimson Tide for the FSU contest at the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Saturday's practice was the Tide's final preseason session of 2017. Alabama will take today off before beginning its game week preparations tomorrow afternoon.

Though practicing yesterday, Josh Jacobs is still somewhat slowed by a hamstring injury. Getting a little more work in on Saturday than Jacobs, outside linebacker Christian Miller is also limited due to a leg problem.

The Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game pitting the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide against the No. 3 Florida State Seminoles will be aired live on ABC with the game scheduled for a 7 p.m. CT kickoff. Calling the contest will be Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Maria Taylor and Tom Rinaldi.

ESPN's College GameDay Says Bama Falls Short

College GameDay
ESPN Photo

Members of ESPN's College GameDay may have disagreed on who would win the 2017 National Championship, but all agreed that the University of Alabama Crimson Tide would once again make the College Football Playoffs...yet fall short again of its goal for its 17th National Championship.

In probably the most "out there" prediction of the GameDay crew, Desmond Howard has the Crimson Tide in the National Championship playing none other than the Stanford Cardinals. Stanford is ranked at No. 14 in the AP Preseason College Football Poll, and is Howard's choice to defeat the Tide for the 2017 crown. Additionally, Howard doesn't even have Bama winning the Southeastern Conference Championship. He awards that to Georgia.

Lee Corso has the USC Trojans winning the national title this year. He picks Florida State, Ohio State, Alabama and USC to make the playoffs.

While Kirk Herbstreit agrees with Corso on the four playoff teams, he is riding with...wait for it...his Ohio State Buckeyes to win the championship. Both Corso and Herbstreit, however, have the Tide winning the SEC this year.

Lee Corso Picks Noles Over Tide In Opener

Lee Corso
ESPN Photo

ESPN's College GameDay panelist Lee Corso apparently hasn't waited for the headgear prediction for next Saturdays Alabama Crimson Tide - Florida State Seminoles matchup in Atlanta, Georgia. He has picked the Noles over the Tide.

Being a Florida State alum himself, Corso cites Florida State's defense as the key to the game. He believes that State will be able to handle the Tide's Jalen Hurts and company.

Florida State's Jimbo Fisher would make history with a victory over Nick Saban and Bama by becoming the first of Saban's assistants to lay a loss on the Tide head man. Saban is 10-0 all-time against his former assistants.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana – The Alabama volleyball team suffered its first loss of the young season in its weekend finale on Saturday at the Mortar Board Premier. The Tide fell in straight sets to 25th-ranked Purdue by scores of 21-25, 12-25 and 14-25.

Crimson Tide freshman Christine Jarman led the team with a season-high eight digs. It was Bama's Abolanle Onipede, Leah Lawrence and Hayley McSparin combining for 12 of the Tide's 19 kills.

Next up for the Crimson Tide is the Jaguar Invitational in Mobile, Alabama which is hosted by South Alabama. Bama will open the weekend against the Jags on Friday, September 1st at 6 p.m. CT, then face Southern Miss at 10 a.m. CT, and finally McNeese State at 4:30 p.m. CT.

Classes Begin, Tide Holds Afternoon Practice

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - The student-athletes that make up the University of Alabama football team began classes on Wednesday with the start of the 2017-18 academic year. The Crimson Tide then followed the first day of classroom instruction with a two-hour practice session in full pads with the temperature hovering near 90 degrees outdoors on the Thomas-Drew Practice Fields.

Sidelined since August 14th with a hamstring injury, running back Josh Jacobs was back on the practice field. He was still, however, somewhat hampered.

After going through concussion protocols, Jamey Mosley has been back at practice the past couple of days.

Outside linebacker Christian Miller appeared to have some sort of protective tape covering his left leg. He, too, appeared somewhat limited in Wednesday's practice.

Wednesday's practice was the 18th of 25 total practices during the fall practices sessions leading up to Bama's season-opener with FSU on September 2nd. The Crimson Tide will take on the Seminoles at the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia. ABC will be carrying the game, with a broadcast start time of 7 p.m. CT.

Both today's and Friday's practices are scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. CT start. Saturday's practice will begin at 2:30 pm and the team will then take Sunday off. Monday will begin actual game week preparations for the FSU game.

Saban Agrees He's Overrated; Point Spread Widens For Bama-FSU; Tide Football No. 1 (updated), Mel Kiper Jr Snubs Tide In Playoffs

Nick Saban Agrees He Is Overrated

During an interview on The Dan Patrick Show, University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban agreed with a recent CBS Sports poll of anonymous coaches listing him as the second most overrated head coach in college football. The most overrated? Jim Harbaugh of Michigan.

In speaking to Patrick about the poll, Saban said, "I probably agree with that. The success that we have is really contributed by a lot of people. We have really good coaches. We have a really good staff of people who work with the players. We've had a tremendous amount of really good players who have made a tremendous commitment to a standard of excellence that has created a lot of success here. So I feel like I get far too much credit."

Honestly, all things considered, calling one of the coaches who have won more national championships than anyone alive today, or running close to anyone else in the history of the sport, overrated really is a bit much. He has led the Crimson Tide to seven Southeastern Conference Western Division titles, five SEC titles and four national championships since 2007. Overrated?

Talk about the key personnel around him, well, who hired them? Part of coaching is surrounding yourself with the right assistants, both coaching on the field and off. Saban has consistently done that. In fact, many of his assistants now have head coaching gigs themselves, have had, or are successfully coaching in the NFL. Overrated?

Speaking of personnel: the players themselves. Here is a coach, yes, along with his assistants whom he himself selected and hired, brought in seven consecutive No.1 recruiting classes. Underrated?

I don't think so.

What began as a 5 1/2-point spread in favor of Alabama, has now increased to a full touchdown and extra point, seven points in the Crimson Tide - Seminoles opening contest scheduled for September 2nd in Atlanta, Georgia. This prediction comes courtesy of both Danny Sheridan and Vegas Insider.
The latest AP Preseason poll was released on Monday, selecting the boys from Bama as the No. 1 group in the land. Florida State was No. 3, with both teams ranked the same as the Amway USA Today Coaches Poll. Alabama received 52 of the 61 first place votes, while State garnered four which was the second most of all the schools.

Crimson Tide Football Again Ranked No. 1
In Associated Press Preseason College Football Poll

The University of Alabama is No. 1 team in college football in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 college football poll. The Crimson Tide is the first college football program in 12 years to capture the top spot in the prestigious national poll for two consecutive years. It should also be noted that Bama starts the 2017 season ranked in the top five of the AP preseason poll for the ninth straight year. It's the eighth consecutive year the Tide has been ranked in the top three, the longest stretch in UA football history.

In its illustrious history, Alabama has topped the AP's preseason poll six times. Additionally the Tide has also started the season No. 1 in the rankings in 1966, 1978, 2010, 2013 as well as 2016.

A total of 13 starters return from last season's Tide team that finished 14-1 and captured the UA's 26th Southeastern Conference crown. Bama has claimed four of the last eight national championships of college football, and boasts a 112-13 record across the last nine seasons under Alabama head coach Nick Saban.

Now if you ask any Alabama football fan, pretty much all of them will tell you that with the returning talent and the stable of new players recruited from the number one recruiting class in the nation, the Crimson Tide deserves the ranking. In fact, most believe UA will march through the season unscathed. (Undefeated is not the prediction I'm making, however the point is that there are many who believe there are only two teams this season that even realistically have a chance to defeat the Tide.)

The Alabama Crimson Tide is the only Southeastern Conference team listed in the AP top 10, but the SEC still leads all conferences with the total number of teams in the Top 25 with six. Following the Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 1 is Auburn (12), LSU (13), Georgia (15), Florida (17) and Tennessee (25). Both Kentucky and Texas A&M received three points apiece falling just outside the Top 25.

Here is a breakdown of the standings by conference:

SEC — 6  (plus 2 just outside Top 25)
ACC — 5
Big 12 — 5
Big Ten — 4
Pac-12 — 4
American — 1

There is no doubt that head coach Nick Saban has brought the Crimson Tide back from the doldrums of previous seasons before arriving at the Capstone. Though Bama has not always won the SEC West, or SEC or a National Championship since Saban brought the tide rolling in again, it has always been in a position to do so.

To begin the 2017 college football season, Alabama received 52 of 61 first-place votes from media members who make up the voting delegation for the AP. Ohio State was No. 2, just edging out No. 3 Florida State. Folks hoping for that No. 1 vs No. 2 in the opening game in Atlanta, Georgia on September 2nd will still have to wait to see that phenomena. However, it will still be only the fourth opening game involving top five teams, and the first opener ever with the preseason top three.

The Alabama Crimson Tide opens its 2017 football season on September 2nd in Atlanta, Georgia facing the third-ranked Florida State Seminoles in the annual Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The contest is slated for a 7 p.m. CT start on the ABC television network. It will be Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Maria Taylor and Tom Rinaldi on the call.

Mel Kiper, Jr Snubs The Tide
In His Final Four Playoff Predictions

ESPN's Mel Kiper, Jr.

It would appear that ESPN recruiting guru Mel Kiper, Jr doesn't have the confidence in Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide football team for 2017 that most have. Kiper not only doesn't pick Bama to win the national championship, he doesn't even place the Tide in the four playoff positions.

Kiper has picked the Washington Huskies to defeat the Florida State Seminoles in the national championship game.

Kiper commented, "I'm going with the Washington Huskies to win the national championship. I look at that team with (Jake) Browning, a really good college quarterback. They've got the coach (Chris Petersen). They've got studs up front. They've got speed at linebacker ... I don't see any other team in (college football) that really wows me.

"Can you just recreate stars at Alabama? Where's the pass-rush going to come from?"

He has Washington as the No. 1 seed, Ohio State at No. 2, Florida State at No. 3. Yes, he has an SEC team in the playoffs. He says Auburn will be the No. 4 seed.

Dari Nowkhah, however, has a different final four and different outcome for the national championship. His final four is Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma State and Washington. He is going with Saban and the Crimson Tide to capture the national championship.
