That's All, Folks!

SOMEWHERE_OVER_THE_RAINBOW - This is the day I promised you. It's the last day of the High Tide blog. At least for awhile. I'm make an appearance occasionally, for big stories, such as naming a new baseball coach and the like. I also plan to return in a more limited role at the end of the summer.

Thank you to those of you who reposted for me on Facebook, the retweets on Twitter, as well as the shares on Pinterest, Instagram and others. Most have been very good to me, but quite a few (Twitter) didn't enjoy the personal side of my Tweets. Thanks to those of you who have cared about the recent passing of my mother, and the health updates of my father.

Love my Crimson Tide! But not the Twitter drama so much. I've never mastered the art of posting thank yous without running people off, then not thanking and running more people off. To those who have hung in there with me: Thank you.

I might suggest that in order to see any new posts, add me in your email. That way when I post, you'll get it first in your mail.

Again, thank you.

God bless you.

Roll Tide!

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – The University of Alabama Crimson Tide rowing team has posted a 3.524 team grade point average for the 2016-17 spring semester, its highest GPA in program history.

UA rowing head coach Larry Davis commented, "Academic excellence is always what we strive for. To have the team achieve this landmark GPA is truly impressive and exciting. I look forward to our continued academic success in the coming years."

Tide rowing boasted 30 Academic All-Big 12 honorees this semester, including an amazing 27 on the league's first team, which requires a GPA of 3.20 or higher. Of the 176 total Academic All-Big 12 award winners across the league, 20 student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 GPA and Alabama was responsible for Big 12-leading six of those 20. In its three seasons as a Big 12 affiliate, Bama has earned 95 Academic All-Big 12 honors.

"This year has truly been a landmark for the program," Davis said. "Not only have we achieved the best spring racing season ever for the program, we also achieved our best academic performance. This has been marked in our awards received through the Big 12 and the SEC, but also with our team GPA being a new benchmark for the program. To achieve this kind of successful balance between academics and athletics is one of our main goals and I am very proud of the team for their success."

Alabama Track & Field Rankings

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – It's another good week for the Alabama Crimson Tide track and field team. The UA men's track and field team moved up one spot to No. 3, while the women advanced three spots to come in at  No. 11 in the latest U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Team Rankings. The men's team boasts 235.10 points while the women's team comes in with 147.39 points.

The national team rankings are compiled by a mathematical formula based on national descending order lists and data taken from previous seasons. The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race. Ranking points do not equate with NCAA Championships team points.

The University of Alabama track & field team qualified 19 athletes in 17 events and the men's and women's 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays for the 2017 NCAA Track and Field Championships to be held June 7-10 at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.

Crimson Tide's Jonathan Hardee
Finishes 19th At NCAA Men's Golf National Championships

SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – Calling it a "great experience", University of Alabama men's golfer Jonathan Hardee finished in a tie for 19th overall at the 2017 NCAA Men's Golf National Championships. Hardee shot a four day total of even par 288 (69-75-67-77), and was one of only 22 golfers in the 156-man field to finish the event at even par or better.

High winds and 30-mile an hour gusts played havoc with Monday's play at the par 72, 7,300-yard Rich Harvest Farms course. Because of these conditions, only four of the 84 golfers who advanced to the championships' final round were able to finish below par. Hardee picked up three birdies on the day to go along with six bogeys and a double bogey on his way to a 5-over par 77.

Hardee commented, "It was a tough day out there today. The beginning of the round was honestly just brutal. The first six or seven holes were really tough. Overall, it was a good tournament for me, but a little disappointing way to finish. I felt I played better than what my score was. I just needed another bounce here or there and a couple of close putts to drop and maybe it would have been a little different."

Braden Thornberry, representing the Ole Miss Rebels, was one of Hardee's playing partner and claimed medalist medalist honors in the championships with an 11-under par 277, while his other playing partner, Mason Overstreet of Arkansas, finished second at 7-under par 281.

Hardee said, "The opportunity to play today was awesome. I couldn't ask for anything more than having the chance to play as an individual. I was able to play in the last group alongside some great players and having my teammates and family there supporting me was a great feeling. I was trying to enjoy myself as much as I could. It was a great experience."

Looking At The Potential 2017 College Football Playoff

So, more numbers for the 2017 season are now trickling in as to the wins/losses and who might we expect to be in this year's College Football Playoff. Thus far the general consensus has three teams in this year, with the fourth up for debate.

All-in-all, most are saying the playoff this year will have the University of Alabama, Florida State and Ohio State in. All three teams are predicted at 10.5 wins out of the regular-season schedule. This means no conference championships are factored in, though all three are expected to win their respective conference championships. (The Crimson Tide has the best odds of surpassing the 10.5 win estimation.) The fourth slot seems to be the sticking point.

Wisconsin appears to be the team the closest to be in the mix. The Badgers are figured to be within one win of the other three. However, the teams with the best chance to fill that fourth slot in the College Football Playoff appears to be Washington, Oklahoma and USC since no teams would be ranked above them from their own respective conferences. However, if all three of the last group have identical records, look for Washington to be out of the running since the Huskies have the weaker record.

Because of the schedules, most now predict the final four to be the Alabama Crimson Tide, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Florida State.

Alabama Men's Golf Misses Cut While Jonathan Hardee Advances; Routliffe & Pothoff Advance To Play In NCAA Women's Tennis National Championship Match

Alabama Men's Golf Misses The Cut At NCAAs
Jonathan Hardee Advances As Individual

SUGAR GROVE, Illinois - The run for a national championship for the University of Alabama men's golf team has ended. The Crimson Tide finished play at the 2017 NCAA Men's Golf National Championships in 17th place, with a three day total of 9-over par 873 (287-293-293), just two strokes short of a top-15 finish and being able to play in the final round of stroke play.

Despite the loss for UA, junior Jonathan Hardee managed to card a third round score of 5-under par 67 on Sunday to advance as an individual in the competition.  He had five birdies with no bogeys in the third round to improve 33 spots into a 17th-place tie with a three-day total of 5-under par 211 (69-75-67). This puts the Greer, South Carolina native into contention for medalist honors, and now advances to the final round of stroke play today.

Alabama head men's golf coach Jay Seawell said, "I think it proves that you have to get into that top-15 going into [Sunday]. That's why (Saturday's round) was so tough because I felt like we gave it away at the end. It forced us to play in the afternoon today when the winds are always greater, which always makes it harder. It's a lesson learned. We fought all the way, just unfortunately we didn't do the things we needed to do at crucial times and today was one of those days.

"I am really proud of Jonathan and the way he played today. He earned a spot in the fourth round. To shoot a 67 in these winds and conditions is something to be proud of. I am looking forward to watching him play tomorrow."

Matching his career-best 18-hole total yesterday, Hardee was one of only two golfers in the field to go the entire round without a bogey, joining Vanderbilt's Matthias Schwab. Hardee recorded three birdies on the front nine and two on the back nine to go along with 13 pars to end the day with the Tide's lowest 18-hole total of the event.

Concerning the effort, Hardee commented, "It was definitely disappointing as a team to miss the cut, but I am still really proud of the guys on this team and the way we handled things throughout the entire year. It was tough year and the way we overcame a lot of adversity, which was awesome to see. I went into today with the mindset of battling to help our team pull through. I am excited to continue playing tomorrow and was very pleased with how I played today. I am looking forward to getting to compete another day."

Fellow Southeastern Conference team and fourth-ranked Vanderbilt (846) leads this year's championship by one stroke over No. 1 USC, No. 16 UNLV and No. 17 Oklahoma, who are each tied for second with an 847. Illinois (850) is fifth.

Hardee will tee off the fourth round of play at 1:40 p.m. CT off Hole No. 1.

Routliffe & Pothoff To Play In National Championship Match

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Alabama's No. 5 nationally-ranked doubles duo will be playing in the National Championship match today. UA senior Erin Routliffe and freshman Maddie Pothoff defeated LSU's No. 16-ranked doubles team consisting of Ryann Foster and Joana Valle Costa in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 yesterday in the semifinals of the 2017 NCAA Women's Tennis Doubles Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia.

Routliffe said, "We played them earlier in the season and we knew they were a really good team. Being a senior and facing them at least four times, I knew how good they were. I told Maddie (Pothoff) before the match to just focus on our strengths and play as aggressive as we could. I think we did that from the very beginning and we played well overall."

Alabama's dynamic duo will will now face Ohio State's No. 18-ranked doubles team of Francesca Di Lorenzo and Miho Kowase in the national championship today set for Noon CT.

The Crimson Tide has been represented in the NCAA individual tournament each of the last eight years and in both the singles and doubles tournament in the same season seven times.

Routliffe captured the NCAA Doubles Championships as well as being named part of the ITA Doubles Team of the year in 2014 and 2015.

Alabama Sits At 1-Under Par 287 After
Opening Round Of 2017 NCAA Men's Golf Champions

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – The University of Alabama men's golf team finished the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Men's National Championships at 1-under par 287 yesterday. Crimson Tide junior Jonathan Hardee carded a 3-under par 69 to lead the Tide.

Alabama men's golf head coach Jay Seawell said, "I am very proud of our guys and the way we played today. We really got off to a great start over our first five or six holes and got ourselves right into the flow of this year's national championship. We did a great job to shoot under par today on a championship venue. I am pleased with how we played. I love how this golf course has changed in the 10 years since I was last here. It's in great shape, it's a great test and it rewards great shots. If you don't hit good shots, then you're going to have some high-scoring holes. Those are the things we have to straighten out a little bit. We need to execute just a little bit better tomorrow, but we have the right attitudes to do just that and I am looking forward to seeing what happens in the second round."

Considering the gusty winds throughout the day yesterday, then followed with the heavy rains in the afternoon, 15 teams that took the tee were unable to complete the round and will have to finish the round this morning. Alabama was one of only three teams to complete the course. Auburn and Ole Miss were the other two, with the Tigers currently leading.

The 23rd-seed Crimson Tide will begin today's second round off Hole No. 1 at 1:30 p.m. CT.

The NCAA Championships will have three rounds of stroke play for the 30-team field, with a cut to 15 teams after 54 holes. Those 15 teams will then be cut to eight teams after a fourth round of stroke play. The eight teams will then begin three rounds of match play for the national title (1 vs. 8, 2 vs. 7, 3 vs. 6, 4 vs. 5), which is slated to be held on May 30-31.

Crimson Tide Softball excitement!

GAINESVILLE, Florida – It's oh so sweet when you can knock off the No. 1 team. It's even sweeter when it's a shutout. The University of Alabama softball team fought with the Florida Gators for four scoreless innings before the Tide was able to to capitalize on two Gator errors to plate three runs, to win the opening contest in a three-game series, by a 3-0 score.

It was Bama ace Alexis Osorio (23-7) leading the Alabama Crimson Tide (46-16) to take the win in a complete-game shutout. Osorio was spectacular, limiting the top-seeded Florida Gators (53-8) to only three hits in the contest. The Bama bullpen has allowed only one run during the NCAA Tournament, including a current streak of 28.2 scoreless innings. Yesterday's shutout game was the 27th of the season for UA, setting a new single-season Alabama softball record.

The Tide picked up all three of its runs in the top of the fifth inning, capitalizing on two throwing errors by Florida starting pitcher Kelly Barnhill (23-3) on two sacrifice bunt attempts. The three runs scored are the most allowed by the Gators since its 3-1 loss to the Florida State Seminoles back on May 3rd.

Demi Turner, Sydney Booker and Rachel Bobo all had hits in the Thursday evening contest. Turner went one-for-four, Booker was one-for-two and Bobo was one-for-one last night.

Game two of the best-of-three series between the Tide and Gators is set for a 6 p.m. CT first pitch on Friday, May 26th. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN.

Alabama Baseball Head Coach Greg Goff Dismissed
By The University Of Alabama After Only One Season

Former UA Head Baseball Coach Greg Goff

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - Alabama baseball head coach Greg Goff has been dismissed by the University of Alabama after only one season in the position. His dismissal was not merely the result of the 19-34-1 overall, 5-24-1 Southeastern Conference record and a last-place finish in the league, but also reported chaos and controversy within the program.

Goff was hired to lead the UA baseball program following the resignation of former head coach Mitch Gaspard at the end of the 2015-16 season. He was hired by then-Director of Athletics Bill Battle following a two-year stint as the head baseball coach at Louisiana Tech. He had also served as the head coach at Campbell as well as Montevallo.

The Tuscaloosa News had reported just one day prior that Goff, in violation of NCAA rules and regulations, had tried to revoke the scholarships of several University of Alabama student-athletes. This, the lowest winning percentage for the program since 1980 as well as a last-place finish helped lead to his undoing.

Numerous changes in the philosophy of the program, style of play and reported tirades against players reportedly overheard by some members of the media, fans and even some family members did not exhibit the core values of the University of Alabama, and had many calling for Goff's ouster. The only true bright spot in this past season under Goff was a three-game sweep over instate-rival Auburn that wasn't enough to save his job.

The internal strife in the program, while perhaps not a constant, occurred regularly throughout the season. It seemed to come to a head when the now-former head coach threatened as many as 10 University of Alabama players with rescinded their scholarships, a violation of NCAA rules.

Those rules, or bylaws, say that can't be done. According to NCAA bylaw 15.3.4.3.1, "an institution (in this case the University of Alabama) may not set forth an athletically related condition (e.g., financial aid contingent upon specified performance or playing a specific position) that would permit the institution to reduce or cancel the student-athlete's financial aid during the period of the award if the conditions are not satisfied."

Though that threat did not come to fruition, the very fact it was brought up to players caused untold harm to the morale and integrity of the University of Alabama baseball program and Athletic Department. It was evident, if it had not been before, that a change was in order.

The announcement of Goff's dismissal came yesterday afternoon from University of Alabama Director of Athletics Greg Byrne.

In his statement, Byrne said, "Things are not easy for these coaches; their families; this program; and this is not something we take lightly at all. I would like to thank Coach Goff and his staff for their contributions over the past year, and I wish them well in future endeavors. Coach Goff has had a lot of success over the years as a baseball coach, and I know that he will have success in the future as well.

"We felt this was the best decision going forward for our baseball program, and that is why we made the decision. You look at these situations when it comes to coaches, and you decide, 'What is the best long-term solution for the program?' – not based off a season or anything like that – just based off the long-term health of the program.

"As we move forward and look ahead, we are looking for the best possible baseball coach that we can get with college experience – that can be a head coach, that can be an assistant coach – but we want somebody that has been in college baseball and understands the dynamics of that.

"We have a lot of desirable resources here at The University of Alabama, including: the incredible stadium, our budget – we fund our baseball program at a very high level – and the Alabama brand that gives all of our teams the ability to recruit nationally for the best opportunity for success. People want to be at Alabama. This is a great and special place, and we are all fortunate to be a part of this athletics department."

Associate head coach Terry Rooney will now serve as interim head coach until a replacement for Goff has been named. The search has already begun for a new head coach, and Goff's name has been removed from the website as Alabama baseball head coach.
