TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - To say there is a lot of hype concerning the University of Alabama men's basketball team this coming season is definitely an understatement. After signing the nation's seventh-ranked recruiting class this past signing period, many of the "experts" from across the country are expecting Crimson Tide head coach Avery Johnson and company to be one of the teams named to the NCAA Tournament field. If so, it would be the first appearance for the Tide since 2012 when Bama fell to Creighton in the opening round.

Jerry Palm of CBS Sports recently released his way-too-early bracketology report, and has the Bama boys as a No. 7 seed in the tourney facing 10th-seeded TCU in the South Region. If the Tide were to win this mythical game, it would go on to face either the No. 2-seed Duke Blue Devils or No. 15-seed Florida Gulf Coast in the next round.

In the ESPN 2017-18 Basketball Power Index, the Crimson Tide comes in at No. 20 in the nation out of the top-50 teams. They are also ranking Bama's defense quite high this coming season, giving the young men in Crimson and White a No. 5 ranking. Offensively ESPN thinks the Tide ranks as the No. 61 offense in the nation.

This could be the year both the University of Alabama football and basketball are ranked in the Top 25 in the nation.

Former Bama Cornerback Aaron Robinson Chooses UCF

Former University of Alabama football cornerback Aaron Robinson (Deerfield Beach High School) has made his decision. Robinson has chosen to transfer to Central Florida, according to a report from AL.com. The 6' 1", 181-pound young man left UA earlier this month.

Robinson, a three-star recruit, was only with the Crimson Tide for one season, working with the second-team defense this past spring. He was expected to be one of, if not the top backup.

Robinson will have to sit out the upcoming season under NCAA transfer rules, but will have three years of eligibility remaining when he takes the field for the 2018 season. He should be a big asset to the Knights, having lost five defensive backs to graduation this year.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - It seems every summer we wind up with a member of the University of Alabama football being arrested. This summer is no different. Crimson Tide senior defensive lineman Da'Shawn Hand was arrested this morning on charges of driving under the influence, according to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office.  While details are not available at the present time, Hand has been released on $1,000 bond. An update will be made when more information surfaces.

University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban issued a statement, saying, "This type of behavior is not acceptable and we are disappointed in Da'Shawn's actions. We are still gathering information and will evaluate what we need to d in terms of appropriate discipline as we move forward, so better choices and decisions can be made in the future."

Hand was named as a preseason All-Southeastern Conference first-team selection. In 2016 he registered 21 tackles and two sacks as a backup. The former five-star was expected to step into a starting position, most likely defensive end.

How The University Of Alabama Got Its Mascot

    Big AL
    University Of Alabama Mascot

Big AL has been around for quite some time now. The University of Alabama sport mascot, an elephant named Big AL, is beloved by Crimson Tide fans of all ages. Everyone, young and old, wants their picture taken with the country's most famous elephant.

So did you ever wonder how the University of Alabama ended up with an elephant as its mascot? The majority of Bama fans know, or have an idea, but how about the newbies? Or others who just like trivia? Let's delve into how Big AL came to be.

We must go back to the 1930 football season when Wallace Wade was the head coach of the Alabama football team. Coach Wade has recruited and coached up a great football team that season. On October 4th of that year the varsity squad took the field to battle the Ole Miss Rebels. Everett Strupper, Atlanta Journal sportswriter, was amazed at the size of the Bama boys as they began play. In his column the following week he wrote, "...the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed , 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity...men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size."

From that season game on Strupper and other sports writers continued referring to the Alabama linemen as "Red Elephants." The red, of course, alluding to the crimson color of their jerseys.

And how did that 1930 Alabama football team fare? They posted a 10-0 record while shutting out eight of their opponents and only allowed 13 points for the entire season. That squad went to the Rose Bowl, rolling over Washington State 24-0 and declared National Champions.

    Now you know.

    Newbies Looking Really Good During
    Alabama Men's Basketball Open Practice

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - Folks are already excited about the upcoming University of Alabama men's basketball season. Especially now that some of the practices are open to the public, allowing fans to actually see returnees and newbies on the court together for the first time.

According to SB Nation, the freshmen combo of Collin Sexton and John Petty are really standing out. SB Nation says that Sexton "stole the show." The report says that Sexton was both "smooth and quick" in his handling of the ball and moving it up the court. It was said that Sexton hit "multiple mid-range jumpers in transition" during the workout/practice. The report also says that Petty had a great "dunk in transition and hit a 3-pointer from the wing" under scrutiny of head basketball coach Avery Johnson. SB Nation also reported that both Alex Reese and Herb Jones "also had standout moments."

Johnson has commented that Ohio State transfer Daniel Giddens has "gained 25 pounds to become an imposing interior force" in practices. He also told SB Nation that Giddens is "providing a lot of muscle," and with the loss of Jimmie (Taylor) and Bola (Olaniyan) inside, "Daniel knows that now it's his turn to come in and provide some of that muscle."

The 2017-18 season is expected to be the best for Bama in many a year.

Former Alabama QB David Cornwell Gets His Shot

It appears that former University of Alabama quarterback David Cornwell is getting his shot at the starting quarterback position. Instead of it being for the 16-time National Champion Crimson Tide football team, it will be for Nevada, coached by head man Jay Norvell.

Norvell has stated that Cornwell will be the starter, at least entering preseason practice. That means the starting position really isn't a lock, and he has his work cut out to hold on the the elevated ranking the head coach has already handed him.

It was big news indeed when Cornwell committed and then signed with the University of Alabama. He was an early enrollee, arriving at The Capstone in 2014 as a four-star recruit. He was unable to take the starting job while with the Tide, and now has his chance to shine.

In the spring game for Nevada, Cornwell completed 22 of 33 passes for approximately 302 yards.

The University of Alabama has picked up a major commitment for the class of 2018. He is four-star offensive tackle Tommy Brown out of Santa Ana (California) Mater Dei.

The 6' 5", 313-pounder was offered just last month by head coach Nick Saban. Tommy's dad, Vince, was on the track & field team, specializing in the shot put, back in the 80s. One might surmise the alma mater of his dad may have helped in the decision-making process.

Brown is rated the No. 12 offensive tackle and No. 169 overall player in the country according to the 247Sports Composite. Brown is Bama's seventh commit for the class of 2018, moving the Tide up to No. 42 in the recruiting rankings per 247Sports.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - University of Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts dazzled the fans of the Crimson Tide last season, not to mention the entire Southeastern Conference. This season should be no different. In fact, Hurts is said to have improved in his passing abilities to go along with his uncanny ability to move the ball via the run. He has now been named to the Davey O'Brien Award watch list, his second 2017 preseason award watch list.

The Davey O'Brien Award was started in 1981, and is presented each year to the student-athlete considered to the best quarterback in college football. The award has actually been around a little longer than that, having previously been called the Davey O'Brien Memorial Trophy started in 1977 and originally was given annually to the nation's top overall college football player.

No former Tide player has ever won the Davey O'Brien Award nor the Davey O'Brien Memorial Trophy. Back in 2013 Bama's A.J. McCarron was named a finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award which eventually went to FSU's Jameis Winston.

Last season Hurts was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Year after producing 2,780 yards, 23 touchdowns, completing 62.8 percent of his passes and a 139.1 quarterback rating. He rushed for a total of 956 rushing yards and 36 touchdowns, both Alabama single-season records for a quarterback.

    Cam Taylor Commits To Mizzou

It appears Alabama lost to Missouri. No, not on the football field. In a particular recruit. Park Crossing's Cam Taylor made his choice to remain in the Southeastern Conference, but instead of the Crimson Tide picking up the young man, he selected the Missouri Tigers of the SEC Eastern Division.

Taylor played quarterback at Prattville last year, but suffered an injury in November requiring surgery to repair a torn knee ligament. The youngster then decided to bolt from Prattville to Park Crossing where everyone expects him to be the starting quarterback this coming fall.

Most major recruiting services have the 6' 0", 200-pound three-star recruit listed as an athlete rather than the quarterback position. Missouri's offered came in the form of a "sort-of promise" as a safety.
Taylor is ranked No. 10 in the state of Alabama by 247Sports for the class of 2018.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – It should come as no surprise that University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban has been named to the 2017 Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Preseason Watch List. The announcement was made by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

Saban is among 18 other coaches on this year's list. He is also one of five former Dodd Trophy winners making this season's list.  Saban is beginning his 11th season at the helm of the Crimson Tide football program, boasting a record of 119-19 (.862) in Tuscaloosa and a career collegiate record of 210-61-1 (.774). Under Saban's guidance, Alabama has captured four national championships and five Southeastern Conference championships. This includes four of the last five titles. A seven-time National Coach of the Year nominee, Saban joined former UA head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant as the only coaches to win five national titles in the modern era. That came when the Crimson Tide defeated Clemson 45-40 in the 2016 College Football Playoff Championship Game.

The Dodd Trophy was established in 1976 to honor the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision head football coach whose program represents the highest ideals on and off the field. The award honors the coach of a team which enjoys a successful football season, while also stressing the importance of academic excellence and character. The winner of the 2017 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta, Georgia during Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl Week.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – It may not be quite that time yet, but the University of Alabama men's golf head coach Jay Seawell has announced the 2017-18 schedule. The announcement came on Thursday, and features four tournaments this coming fall as well as five more this next spring. Some of the biggies this coming season for the Crimson Tide will be a return trip to Puerto Rico for the 14th consecutive year, as well as returning to tournaments such as the Southern Highlands Masters and Mason Rudolph Invitational. Alabama will also be hosting the 32nd annual Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Vestavia Hills, Alabama in the fall.

Seawell commented, "Our philosophy has always been to challenge our team with a schedule that will prepare them to win championships. We will once again play some of the best courses and teams so that our guys will be pushed to be their best week in and week out."

Bama is scheduled to play in a total of four events, two of which fall in September as well as two additional events in October for the fall season. Beginning this new season the Crimson Tide will be playing in a tournament it has won three times, the Carpet Capital Collegiate, scheduled for September 8-10. That one is being held at The Farm Golf Club in Dalton, Georgia. The UA men will then travel to Olympia Fields Country Club just outside of Chicago, Illinois to compete in the Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational slated for play on September 15-17.

Kicking off the month of October the Bama boys will participate in the annual Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which will be held October 9-10 at Old Overton in Vestavia, Hills, Alabama. The Tide won the event eight of the last 11 years now, with Alabama senior Lee Hodges finishing the tourney in third place.

Bama closes out the 2017 fall season with the Steelwood Collegiate, now in its second season, hosted by South Alabama. This one is to be played in Loxley, Alabama.

Kicking of the 2018 spring campaign, Alabama again returns to the Puerto Rico Classic, held at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Mar Beach, Puerto Rico slated for February 18-20. The Crimson Tide has won the tournament six times in program history.

Bama will then head to Las Vegas, Nevada for the Southern Highlands Masters, scheduled to be played March 5-7. Then following that one, the Tide heads to Greensboro, Georgia on March 18-20 to participate in the Linger Longer Invitational.

The Crimson Tide then launches the month of April with the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas. This year marks the program's first appearance in the event since the 2012-13 campaign. Bama will then close out the regular season at the Mason Rudolph Championship on April 13-15 in Nashville, Tennessee.  Alabama has finished in the top three for four consecutive years, including winning the title in 2014 and last year's season-best second-place result.

Postseason play for the Tide will begin April 21-24 with the SEC Championship held in Sea Island, Georgia at the Sea Island Golf Club Seaside Course. NCAA Regionals are scheduled for May 14-16, with the golf season set to conclude May 25-30 at the NCAA Championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Two Crimson Tide Football Players To Transfer

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - Two players from the University of Alabama football program have left the team. Both players, running back B.J. Emmons and corner back Aaron Robinson, are second-year players for the Crimson Tide.

Emmons had previously been slotted as the No. 2 running back in the nation and No. 36 overall prospect in last year's recruiting class per 247Sports Composite Rankings. Emmons suffered a season-ending foot injury last November, and was limited in his participation this past spring.

Robinson came to The Capstone as a three-star recruit last year. He was penciled-in as the main backup at corner back for the Tide. He worked with the second-team defense during Alabama's spring game back in April.

    U.K. Photo

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama Crimson Tide head baseball coach Brad Bohannon has officially announced the hiring of a new Director of Baseball Operations. He is Jack Hoehl, coming to The Capstone from the University of Kentucky where he spent the previous four seasons in the same position.

In his statement, Bohannon said, "I was with Jack at Kentucky, so I had the ability to work up close with him for multiple years. I think he is as good as anybody in college baseball. I really appreciate him trusting me to come be a part of our team. He has a lot of experience working in the Southeastern Conference and will be a huge asset to me and my staff in our first season together."

Hoehl helped the Wildcats reach an NCAA Regional berth in his first year with the program in 2014. In 2015 he was key in helping UK to a 30-win season, including 14 wins in the SEC. Kentucky then added another 30-win season in 2016 on the way to a Southeastern Conference Tournament appearance. The 'Cats finished as a Super Regional team in 2017 with Hoehl coordinating all operations.

Prior to his time at Kentucky, Hoehl was at Auburn where he spent four years as the head student manager for the baseball program, before serving as an event management assistant for the 2012-13 school year. As the event management assistant, Hoehl worked Auburn events for football, men's basketball, baseball, equestrian, track and field, cross country and women's golf. During his final season with the Tigers, Hoehl assisted in the planning and execution the 2013 Inaugural SEC Equestrian Championship and the 2013 NCAA Women's Golf Regional.

Hoehl also oversaw all responsibilities for team managers, including scheduling, field preparation, training and game day coordination while he served as the head student manager during his undergraduate years for the Tigers. He also operated the video analysis system, compiled innovative statistical measurements and assisted the recruiting coordinator in game day preparations and prospect visits. He also was charged with creating and producing motivational and promotional videos for the program while spending the off-season supervising the AU summer baseball camps. Hoehl has also served as the coordinator of operations for the BB&T Atlanta Open (men's tennis) and as an operations intern with the Atlanta Tennis Championships.

Hoehl is a 2012 graduate of Auburn University with a degree in supply chain management.
