TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – The Greg Goff era at the University of Alabama has begun. The Crimson Tide claimed its first victory of the 2017 baseball season with a 4-3 win over Presbyterian College on Friday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Head coach Greg Goff picked up his first career win at the helm of the Tide, as Bama now is 1-0 on the season.

Goff commented, "I'm just so thankful that the good Lord has brought me here and opened this door. I'm glad that Coach (Bill) Battle hired me. The biggest thing for me is that these guys have bought in to what we're doing. Nick Eicholtz has been a tremendous leader on and off the field. Cody Henry has been one of our hardest workers, and I think that all of guys are like that. It's a special night because great players make great coaches."

Nick Eicholtz (1-0) earned the victory. The Alabama senior pitched 5.0 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Eicholtz threw a total of 80 pitches before handing the ball over to sophomore right-hander Brock Love. Love put in 4.0 innings of scoreless baseball, picking up his first career save. Presbyterian starter Brian Kehner (0-1) took the loss, going 5.0 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts.

Crimson Tide leadoff man Chandler Avant finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and a team-high two runs scored, followed by Cobie Vance with two hits in four at-bats as well as one RBI. No. 3 hitter in the Bama lineup,  Hunter Alexander, was able to reach base four times, going 2-for-2 with a run scored, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. Chandler Taylor, hitting cleanup, finished 1-for-4 with a triple and a team-high two RBI.

The Crimson Tide and Blue Hose will play game two in the series this evening 5 p.m. CT. Jake Walters will take to the mound later today while Presbyterian will counter with a junior right-hander Tanner Chock.

Saban Reportedly Hires Daboll As New OC

Brian Daboll
Photo Credit: USA TODAY Sports/Kyle Terada

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — University of Alabama football head coach Nick Saban has reportedly hired his new offensive coordinator. Though a formal announcement has not yet been made, Saban pulled the trigger on the deal on Friday, according to various sources. That OC is New England Patriots tight ends coach Brian Daboll. He will replace Steve Sarkisian who departed for the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL for the same position after coaching only one game with the Crimson Tide.

Daboll served as a graduate assistant under Saban at Michigan State (1998-99). Saban is well-known for hiring coaches who have worked for him at some point.

The fact that Daboll worked for the Patriots under Bill Belichick, whom Saban respects, admires and was mentored by certainly didn't hurt things either.

Though the 41-year old Daboll was born in Welland, Ontario, he attended high school in New York, and was, in fact, a pretty famous letterman there. He then became a two-year starter in college at the University of Rochester.

Following his stint as a graduate assistant at Michigan State, Daboll had a brief turn as a defensive assistant with the Patriots in 2000, which didn't last long. Daboll moved to the offensive side of the ball in 2002, and has since coached offense in some capacity each season since.

One could say that Daboll got his first real big break as the Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator in 2009, where he spent the 2009-10 seasons in that capacity.

From there, Daboll was with the Miami Dolphins (2011) for a year and the Kansas City Chiefs (2012) for one season. After spending one year as a coaching assistant (2013) with the Patriots, he was made the tight ends coach in 2014.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - University of Alabama men's basketball head coach Avery Johnson is reporting that Crimson Tide junior swingman Nick King will not be participating in any of the remaining games this season. King has not suited up to play since early December due to a health issue.

Johnson announced just Friday that recent tests have revealed that King will not be able to return to participate in active practices or games this season. Johnson said that King has been "unable to participate in any basketball activities" since the young student-athlete was diagnosed with a lung infection in the late fall, causing him to rapidly lose weight. It was just this past November that King began to feel ill during a tournament in Las Vegas.

King averaged 3.3 points and 12.7 minutes per game for Bama in the seven contests in which he was able to participate early in the season.

HOOVER, Alabama  - There have been a lot of scrapes with the law the past few years concerning current and former University of Alabama football players. The latest is former Crimson Tide running back Trent Richardson who was arrested in Hoover on Thursday on a domestic violence charge.

A 911 emergency call came in to the Hoover Police Department at approximately 8:04 p.m. CT. The report was a possible domestic disturbance at the Hyatt Place Hotel located on John Hawkins Parkway. A second call came only one minute later reporting that yelling was coming from one of the guest rooms, according to Hoover Police Captain Gregg Rector. Officers were responded to the calls at approximately 8:08 p.m. and were escorted to the room of which the complaint had been made.

The contact was an adult male, later identified as Richardson, and an unnamed adult female. The pair were involved in a domestic altercation according to Rector. The pair were interviewed and it was discovered the argument had actually begun earlier at the Walmart just down the road. Reportedly the argument became physical and the woman sustained minor injuries, mainly scratches and bruising to her face.

The victim's injuries were cared for by Hoover Fire Department paramedics at the scene and required no further medical treatment.

The two calls to 911 came from a guest as well as a hotel employee.

Rector stated that Richardson was "cooperative" and "was arrested without incident."
