To Mississippi State On Friday

STARKVILLE, Mississippi – Alabama baseball did what it's done a lot this season. Coming up short. In fact, the Crimson Tide came up short in both of Friday's games. Bama fell first 4-3 in game one before suffering a 13-12 defeat in a 13-inning marathon in game two.  UA currently sits at 15-25 overall and 2-16 in Southeastern Conference play.

GAME ONE
Game one on Friday finished in favor of the Bulldogs, as Mississippi State eased on by the Crimson Tide 4-3. Alabama built an early 3-0 lead heading to the bottom of the third inning, but M.S. would collect one in the third, two in the fourth and another one in the fifth to take the win as well as the series victory.

UA starting pitcher Nick Eicholtz (1-1) put in 4.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out two.  Sam Finnerty then took over, pitching 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball and striking out a career-high seven batters.

Leading the Bama offense was Chandler Taylor  on a three-for-three, one walk and one run game. Cody Henry was two-for-four with two doubles and two RBIs.

GAME TWO
The Crimson Tide fell in a 13-1, 13 inning marathon that extended into Saturday morning. The game totaled just 17 minutes shy of six hours, the longest game in Alabama baseball history.

The two teams maintained large lead swings, with Bama going up by five heading into the bottom of the sixth before the Bulldogs knocked in nine runs in that inning. Alabama then picked up two runs apiece in the seventh and eighth innings to even things up and send the game into extra innings. In the 11th inning, both teams scored three runs before State secured the win in the bottom of the 13th inning.

Bama's Kyle Kaufman was two-for-four with three runs, Cobie Vance went two-for-six with two runs and one RBI, Chandler Taylor went two-for-seven with one run, and finally, Sam Finnerty hit on two-for-five with two runs and four RBIs.

Next up for the Tide will be Jacksonville State for a midweek matchup on Tuesday, April 25th. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CT at Sewell-Thomas Stadium with the game airing live on SEC Network+. This will be the second matchup of the season between the two schools, with the Gamecocks claiming the first contest this season 2-1 in a 10-inning game back on February 28th.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - The Crimson Tide swimming and diving teams celebrated the 2016-17 season with its annual year-end awards banquet Friday evening. It was a great evening of fun, memories and honors being handed out.

In his fifth year as Alabama swimming and diving head coach Dennis Pursley, in his fifth season as the head man, as well as his staff handed out a number of awards following a season that saw the men's team post its third consecutive top-10 NCAA finish and the women once again scored at the NCAA Championships.

Here are the individual awards handed out during Friday's banquet:
  • Coaches Award: Will Freeman & Mia Nonnenberg
  • Most Outstanding Swimmer: Anton McKee, Connor Oslin & Bailey Scott
  • Most Outstanding Diver: Brent Sagert & Kara Fredlock
  • Most Valuable: Robert Howard & Alexis Preski
  • Most Dedicated: Daniel Kober & Nicole Raicik
  • Best Competitor: Laurent Bams & Hannah Musser
  • Leadership Award: Carlo Rezzonico & Mia Nonnenberg
  • Most Spirited: Jack Hadjiconstantinou

The Crimson Tide had 10 members to combine for 22 All-America honors in 2017. Alabama also broke a dozen UA records, including eight individual and four relays marks.

Equally impressive has been UA's academic success. Both the Bama men and women totalled better than a 3.5 team grade point average in the fall, well over the 3.31 average of the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Teams, which requires a 3.0 team GPA.

Alabama ranked first among SEC teams, fifth among all Division I men's teams and was one of just two teams finish in the top-10 at the 2017 NCAA Championships and among the top 10 by team GPA this fall. On the women's side, Alabama was 20th among all Division I programs with a 3.55 GPA, which also ranked the Tide second among SEC schools and fifth among schools that scored at the 2017 NCAA Championships.

Alabama Softball Falls To Washington 3-2

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – The Alabama Crimson Tide softball team fell short by one run as the Washington Huskies defeated UA 3-2 on Friday evening at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Though the Tide faced a two-run deficit in the seventh inning, Bama managed to score one run and put the potential go-ahead run to the plate, but the comeback unfortunately fell short.

UA head coach Patrick Murphy said, "In a game like this, Washington just got the key hit. I think if we would have had one more person on base in the last inning, we could have won. Alexis [Osorio] threw a good game, but Washington is a good team."

Alabama (37-10) and Washington (33-10) were nearly statistically even, each with six hits, and Bama drawing two walks to the Huskies' one. A late two-run home run by Washington's Kirstyn Thomas ultimately made the difference, though an RBI single by Claire Jenkins in the bottom of the seventh did bring the Tide within one and put the potential tying run on base. Jenkins was one of six Alabama batters to earn a hit in the game, with fellow freshman Gabby Callaway plating UA's other RBI. Alexis Osorio (18-6) suffered the loss while Taran Alvelo (20-6) captured the win for Washington. Both pitchers went the distance.

The two teams face meet again this afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. CT at Rhoads Stadium.
