New Information Available
On Da'Shawn Hand's DUI Arrest

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - It would appear that University of Alabama defensive lineman Da'Shawn Hand was not driving the vehicle when he was arrested early Saturday morning for DUI, but rather asleep at the wheel with the keys in the ignition. However, Alabama state law does not require an individual to actually be driving a vehicle, but merely "in actual physical control of any vehicle" while under the influence of an illegal substance such as alcohol.

The time of the arrest was reported to be at 4:30 a.m. CT on Saturday at the 1100 block of University Blvd. This would place hand in his vehicle just off the Strip near the UA campus and only a few blocks from Bryant-Denny Stadium.

University of Alabama football head coach Nick Saban released the following statement on Saturday:

"This type of behavior is not acceptable and we are disappointed in Da'Shawn's actions. We are still gathering information and will evaluate what we need to do in terms of appropriate discipline as we move forward, so better choices and decisions can be made in the future."

Finebaum Critical Of Nick Saban As Disciplinarian

Paul Finebaum has made a living speaking out when it comes to the University of Alabama, as well as Auburn and other schools in the state of Alabama when in Birmingham. Once he became syndicated, and eventually actually working for ESPN itself and moving to the headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut, Finebaum expanded his repertoire to the whole of the Southeastern Conference. It works for him. It brings him ratings, which in turn brings him advertisers and more money for the ESPN mothership, which in turn kept him from the recent firings at the network.

Finebaum has recently spoken out concerning the recent arrest of University of Alabama defensive back Da'Shawn Hand, but mostly those comments have been directed at Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban. Saban issued a statement following Hand's arrest, but Finebaum believes that this may be the foreshadowing of Saban again not doing enough when it comes to player discipline.

On the ESPN program, SportsCenter on Sunday, Finebaum commented, "This is to me Nick Saban at his weakest link. I think he's been soft on discipline. This is a very serious allegation.

"This close to training camp? This close to the regular season? I think it ought to be an automatic one-game suspension at the minimum."

Here, again, is the statement released by Saban on Saturday following the arrest of Da'Shawn Hand:

"This type of behavior is not acceptable and we are disappointed in Da'Shawn's actions. We are still gathering information and will evaluate what we need to do in terms of appropriate discipline as we move forward, so better choices and decisions can be made in the future."

Finebaum has taken issue with what Saban says versus what Saban does.

"Nick Saban's sending out mixed messages," Finebaum said. "He said that he (Hand) 'did wrong', but he also said that 'we have to gather more information.' How can you say one thing without doing the other?"

Finebaum hasn't been shy about confronting Saban about such matters. Hard to forget the exchange between the pair just last year on the set of the 2016 SEC Media Days...a rather heated affair following the arrest of two Crimson Tide players.

Five players in the Saban era have been arrested and charged with DUI. Finebaum can tell you about them all...as well as what was done and wasn't done.

The Hand incident? Finebaum believes he should be suspended. "We'll listen to Nick Saban nuance his words and work on internal issues and let the player set the template," he said. "I don't buy any of that. I think he (Hand) ought to be gone at least for the Florida State game. And that's only the biggest game of the season for Alabama."

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - The University of Alabama baseball program yesterday announced that former Crimson Tide catcher Brock Bennett has rejoined the team as a volunteer assistant coach. In a statement released on Monday, Bama head baseball coach Brad Bohannon said, "I'm so excited to bring a former Alabama baseball player back to our program in Brock Bennett. Brock has a tremendous reputation here and across college baseball. He brings a lot of energy and is very positive, and his personality matches our whole staff. He will coordinate our camps and work with our catchers, and I am very pleased to be able to have him as part of my staff here in Tuscaloosa."

Bennett played at the Capstone back from 2007 through 2011, appearing in more than a hundred games in his career. He was most recently a volunteer assistant for two years at Georgia State.
