1965 Alabama Football National Championship; 5-Star Linebacker Prospect Ben Davis Still Undecided; Lauren Beers & Emily Zabor Earn Honors; Cornerback Jared Mayden To Announce At The Opening; Bama Soph Shelton Helps Regain Palmer Cup

1965 Alabama Football National Championship

The third national championship for Paul Bear Bryant, and the eighth for the Alabama Crimson Tide came in 1965. The '65 team completed the regular season 8-1-1, won the Southeastern Conference championship, and was invited to play in the January 1, 1966 Orange Bowl.

The two blemishes on the 1965 record came at the hands of Georgia and Tennessee. Bama fell to the Georgia Bulldogs and tied the Vols during the regular season.

The Crimson Tide went on to play the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Orange Bowl, winning 39-28. Bama finished the season at 9-1-1. The outstanding player of the game was Steve Sloan. The Associated Press and Football Writers awarded the 1965 National Championship to Alabama.

5-Star Linebacker Still Undecided

6' 4", 230-pound 5-star linebacker Ben Davis still says he is no closer to making a decision as to which of the more than 20 scholarship offers he's taking. In fact, he has no clear favorites, according to him.

He told Al.com in an interview that he was interested in every school that has offered him, which of course includes the Crimson Tide. He says he's just "taking it one day at a time."

One would think with his close proximity to Tuscaloosa and the fact that his father, Wayne, holds the school record for career tackles would sway him. Consider the fact that he has visited the Capstone more than any other institution and one would believe Bama has the edge. But Davis says no. He says that he'll probably go to signing day before he makes a decision.

So it's still a waiting game as far as the big linebacker from Gordo is concerned. Waiting for that "thing", that intangible to grab him and show him where he should commit. And it could be a long wait...all the way up to national signing day.

Lauren Beers & Emily Zabor Earn Honors

Nine University of Alabama student-athletes have earned Academic All-American honors during the 2014-15 academic year. The two latest to join that group are gymnast Lauren Beers and tennis player Emily Zabor. They are proud members of the 2015 Women's Capital One Academic All-American At-Large Team as selected by College Sports Information Directors of America.

This is the second year for Beers being named to the at-large team. This is the first year for Zabor. Both ladies have now won two NCAA Elite 89 Award honors each.

Tide athletes have now earned 14 spots on the Academic All-American At-Large team. The at-large team covers the sports of  fencing, gymnastics, ice hockey, golf, rifle, lacrosse, swimming, skiing, swimming and diving, water polo, tennis, bowling, rowing, and field hockey.

UA Associate Athletics Director for Support Services, Jon Dever, commented, "Lauren and Emily are prime examples of why we have been so successful in both the classroom and the athletic arena. They are both driven, dedicated young women who have worked extremely hard to be their very best in every aspect of the collegiate experience.

Cornerback Jared Mayden To Announce At The Opening

44 offers and counting. Before 4-star cornerback Jared Mayden announces his decision on where to play college football, many believe his scholarship offers will surpass 50. But the Grand Prairie, Texas recruit doesn't really give it much thought. Doing his best is his primary focus.

Needless to say, Mayden is one of the country's most coveted defensive backs. He's 6' 1", 190-pounds of athlete with good speed and the ability to make the tackle from the secondary.

Mayden is planning to announce his top selections on his birthday, June 24. But everyone will have to await for a commitment until The Opening between July 5th and the 10th in Beaverton, Oregon. The only two schools he mentioned that would most likely make the June 24 cut were Alabama and Ohio State.

Mayden plans to make several visits before his decision.

One of the University of Alabama's own helped the United States regain the Palmer Cup! Alabama sophomore Robbie Shelton was instrumental in the U.S. victory over Europe at the Rich Harvest Farms golf club to win the 2015 Palmer Cup 18-12. Shelton won all four of his matches.

Two American golfers, one of which was Shelton, posted perfect records during the three-day event. Shelton and Vanderbilt's Hunter Stewart became only the 15th and 16th players to post the perfect 4-0 records, and the first for the United States since 2012. It is also the first time multiple players went undefeated and untied in the same event since 2006.

The United States lost the Palmer Cup last year, but in regaining it this year now leads the all-time series 10-8-1.

This was Shelton's second year of Palmer Cup competition. His overall record stands at 6-2.
