Alabama head baseball coach Mitch Gaspard had nothing but praise for Mississippi State and their starting pitcher, saying, "I thought today that Zac Houston was terrific and did a great job. I thought Mississippi State played really well and defended extremely well. I thought they just outplayed us today."
Houston put in 8.2 innings of one-run baseball against the Crimson Tide yesterday. The junior allowed just four hits, no walks while striking out five Bama batters. He was pulled from the game, however, in the bottom of the ninth after allowing a pair of hits as the Crimson Tide attempted a comeback. The Bulldogs brought in Blake Smith for his fourth save of the year.
Alabama Crimson Tide starting pitcher Geoffrey Bramblett worked 5.2 innings in yesterday's contest, allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out four. The junior threw a total of 95 pitches on the day.
Gaspard then called on freshman Sam Finnerty in relief of Bramblett who worked the final 2.1 innings. Finnerty did his job, keeping State from scoring, and allowed only three hits and one walk in his first career postseason outing.
Alabama will now face elimination, battling the Florida Gators who fell to LSU last night. The two teams will meet in the second matchup of the morning session on today, approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the Texas A&M - South Carolina contest which is scheduled for this morning at 9 a.m. CT. The Crimson Tide will look to sophomore right-hander Jake Walters while the Gators start righty Logan Shore.
Other matchups on tap for today are No. 7 Ole Miss vs No. 6 Vanderbilt at 4:30 p.m. CT, followed by No. 1 Mississippi State vs No. 5 LSU approximately 30 minutes later.
