The Crimson Tide will be going agains some tough competition in the 24-team championship this season, and includes 17 teams currently ranked in the Top 25. Eight of those teams are ranked in the top 10, which are USC (2), UCLA (3), Florida (4), Duke (5), Georgia (6), Northwestern (7), Oklahoma State (8) and Arizona (10).

The remaining competition for the Tide includes Arkansas (11), Stanford (12), Washington (13), VIrginia (15), Florida State (16), South Carolina (18), Furman (19), Oregon (20), Tennessee (21), Texas (24), Ohio State (25), Michigan, BYU, Miami (Fla.) and North Carolina.

Giddens Signs With Alabama Men's Basketball

Transfer Daniel Giddens Inks It With The Crimson Tide

It's official! Although he will have to sit out the 2016-17 season, highly-rated and highly-anticipated transfer Daniel Giddens has signed with the University of Alabama men's basketball program, according to head coach Avery Johnson. The 6' 10", 230-pound power forward/center played his freshman season at Ohio State, and recently let it be known he was leaving and entertained numerous schools before deciding on Alabama and Avery Johnson. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Johnson said, "We are pleased to welcome Daniel to the University of Alabama men's basketball family. We're excited to add someone who has great character and a high competitive spirit. He will sit out a year in which he can learn more about our system, while also expanding his game on the court.

"We want to thank his family, his dad, Harvey, his mom, Wendy, and his little brother, David, for having the confidence in our program that we would be the best fit for Daniel on the court and in the classroom."

Giddens participated in 33 games during his freshman season at OSU, with seven of those being starts. He averaged 3.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game. The young man showed improvement as the year progressed, bring his averages to 5.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks a game in four postseason contests, including going for a season-high 11 points in a loss to Florida in the second round of the 2016 National Invitation Tournament.

Giddens was a consensus top 50 player and top 10 center in the nation as he helped his Oak Hill Academy team to a 47-1 record in 2014-15.

Prior to his time at Oak Hill Academy, Giddens, a native of Marietta, Ga., played at Wheeler High School where he averaged 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks per game while leading his team to the Georgia Region 5 title.

Giddens was rated by ESPN.com as the No. 2-rated player in its "Best Available Transfers" in the nation.

Shortly after classes had ended for spring and graduation had taken place, University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban had said that players needed to go out on their spring breaks, 3 weeks away from the watchful eyes of the university, coaching staff, and fellow players, and make good decisions. He told the players, "It is time for you to relax but you can still grow. It doesn't mean you have to work out every day. It doesn't mean you have you have to kill yourself, but you can still grow in terms of how you think, the choices and decisions that you make in terms of what's going to benefit you in being a better player and better competitor next year."

Saban was in Mobile yesterday afternoon and conducted a radio interview on WNSP-FM. He had a little to say about Cam Robinson and Hootie Jones and the drug and weapons charges filed yesterday morning in Monroe, Louisiana.

Saban commented, "We all have a responsibility and obligation to represent the university, ourselves and our family in a first-class way. Obviously, we're a little disappointed that better choices and decisions weren't made here, but until we get the facts, we don't really have much else to say about it."

Robinson and Jones were spotted in a Monroe, Louisiana parking lot where they were approached. One of the officers commented they could smell marijuana, as well as spotting a bag of it in the floor and also a stolen weapon under Robinson's seat. They were arrested around 2:30 a.m. yesterday, and charged shortly thereafter on possession of a controlled substance. The charge of felony possession of a stolen firearm was then added to Robinson's charges.

The gun was found under the driver's seat Robinson had been in, and was stolen out of a vehicle in Baldwin County in April 2015, according to the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office. There were no known suspects in the stolen gun case.

According to the Monroe Police Department report, an officer patrolling the area saw a single vehicle parked inside the park, which was closed at the time. As the officer approached the vehicle he smelled a strong odor which he believed to be from marijuana coming from the car. After noticing a handgun on Jones' lap, the officer asked both Robinson and Jones to exit the vehicle, according to the police report.

The officer then searched the car, and found what he suspected was marijuana, as well as the alleged stolen gun. Robinson and Jones were then both arrested.

The case has been forwarded to the District Attorney's office, and the investigation is ongoing, according to the Monroe Police Department.

Prior to yesterday afternoon's radio interview Saban had already said that a determination would be forthcoming concerning internal action against the players by the athletic department and football program after the full details of the incident were known.

The University of Alabama men's track and field teams have moved up in the most recent U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Team Rankings. The Tide men moved up two spots to No. 7 while the women jumped three places to No. 25. The men's team scored 150.53 points while the women scored 81.19 points.

The men and women both remain second behind Florida in their respective rankings in this week’s South Region Index . The Southeastern Conference continues to dominate, earning the No. 1 spots on the men’s and women’s conference Index Top 10 list totaling 1,919.89 points for the men and 2,052.01 points for the women.

Alabama will return to action at the NCAA East Regional, May 26-28, at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla.

The national team rankings are compiled by mathematical formulae based on national descending order lists and data taken from previous seasons. The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race. Rankings points do not equate with NCAA Championships team points.

The University of Alabama men's golf team finished the second round of the 2016 NCAA Men's Golf Tuscaloosa Regional in fourth place yesterday carding 4-under par 284 with a team total of 576 (294-282). Tide freshman Davis Riley tied his career-low round with a 5-under 67 to lead the Tide.

The fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs continue to lead the field with a 36-hole total of 10-under par 566. The Bulldogs lead by three strokes over the 17th-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks (569). Kentucky is in third place with a 575, followed by the Crimson Tide. Auburn come in at fifth place with a team score of 584, but are nine strokes ahead of Charleston and UNLV who are tied for sixth with a 593 each.

The top five teams from this and each of the regionals will move on to the NCAA Men's Golf National Championships, which are to be played May 27 - June 1 in Eugene, Oregon.

Alabama head men's golf coach Jay Seawell said,"I was really proud of how we played today (Tuesday). I thought we looked a lot more comfortable out there today. The golf course is still playing hard. For some reason we are seeing things we shouldn't be seeing. Maybe we know too much about the course, I don't know. For the most part, I thought we were really relaxed today and played well, which gives us an opportunity to do something (Wednesday).

The Alabama men's team combined for 12 birdies and an eagle through the first nine holes, led by Riley who was near perfect yesterday matching his career-best 19-hole mark. Riley was one of just 14 golfers on the day to shoot under par on Tuesday. The Hattiesburg, Mississippi native enters today's third and final round in a tie for fifth place with a 36-hole total of 4-under par 141 (74-67).

Junior Robby Shelton, the only Crimson Tide golfer to shoot under par in round one on Monday, finished the second round at 2-over par 74. He is in a tie for 14th place with a two-day total of 1-over par 145 on the par 72, 7,514-yard Ol' Colony Golf Complex.

"We needed someone to be that horse today with Robby (Shelton) not playing as well, and that person was Davis," commented Seawell.  "Davis played well yesterday but just stumbled coming into the finish. We knew he was going to play well, but what a clutch performance for us."

Crimson Tide sophomore Jonathan Hardee (73-73) and junior Dru Love (74-72) are in a tie for 20th with both individually at 2-over par 146, while senior Tom Lovelady rounds out the Bama golfers in a tie for 26th place at 3-over par 147 (75-72).

Alabama will be grouped with Charleston and Auburn in today's third and final round. Tee time is set for 8:20 a.m. CT. Admission to the event is free for the general public.
