He's the highest-ever rated prep quarterback from the state of Hawaii. And he announced he's coming to play his college football for the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. The announcement came last night just after 11 p.m. CT (6 p.m. Hawaii time) on KHON2 television.
Four-star quarterback commit Tua Tagovailoa (pronounced Too-Ahh Tag-Oh-Vie-Loe-Ahh) last night made it official as he selected the University of Alabama over numerous colleges seeking his services, including Ole Miss, Texas A&M, USC, UCLA and Hawaii.
Tagovailoa had recently mad a trip to visit the Capstone with his father, and the 6' 1", 210-pound youngster was impressed not with just the football facilities and the program itself, but the way of life and people got his attention as well. In a statement to KHON2 he said, "I feel like I'm home over there. Everybody on Sunday goes to church and that's something big in my life as far as spirituality. I couldn't ask for anything better."
The youngster is the No. 2-rated dual-threat quarterback in the country and the No. 60 overall recruit for the class of 2017.
Tagovailoa said he has been pretty familiar with the Crimson Tide football program over the years, watching the team play on television and winning championships. He was really impressed with academics as well, noting that many academic awards come to Alabama players from all areas of sports.
When discussing the distance from home, Tagovailoa said that wasn't going to be such a big deal. He did mention that he didn't like the idea of not getting to talk to his parents as much, but then added that they are looking "for a place down in Mobile to live," according to AL.com.
Concerning the Alabama head football coach, Tagovailoa said, "Coach Nick Saban is a really good guy and a really humble man. Soft spoken, but the words hit."
Tagovailoa passed for 2,583 yards, 33 touchdowns while only having three of his passes picked off. He also rushed for 576 yards as a junior this past season for the Crusaders.
The young man says he is planning another visit to the Capstone next month.

Morehead State graduate Corban Collins has signed a financial aid agreement and will transfer to the University of Alabama to play basketball for the Crimson Tide for the 2016-17 season, according to Alabama head basketball coach Avery Johnson.
The 6' 3", 190-pound guard earned Ohio Valley Conference second team honors during the 2015-16 season. Collins graduated with a degree in health promotion last December and will be attending graduate school at Alabama.
Johnson said, "We are thrilled to have Corban Collins join our program. We had a great time getting to know Corban and his family over the weekend and they will fit right in with our basketball family. Corban is a terrific young man, a good teammate and fills a need for us in terms of someone who can really score the basketball. He is familiar with the SEC having played in the conference already and I expect him to have a seamless transition to our program."
The High Point, North Carolina native has played in 30 games, 28 of which were starts last season. He led the Eagles in scoring with 11 points per game, 3 assists per game and averaged 29.0 minutes per game. He led the team in three-point shots made at 57 while attempting 134.
Not only does Collins participate on the court, he is involved off the court as well. He was a 2015 AllState NABC Good Works Team finalist last year. He spent a portion of last summer in New Zealand with Athletes in Action, a Christian organization known for using sports as a platform in helping to answer questions of faith.
Collins is the second graduate senior to transfer to the Alabama men's basketball program in the short time Johnson has been Alabama's head coach. Arthur Edwards was the first, coming to the Tide from New Mexico.
Collins commented, "I'm very excited to get started and get to work. I look forward to working with my teammates, coach Johnson and the rest of the coaching staff. I’m excited to be a part of the Crimson Tide family."
