Crimson Tide Men's Basketball Falls To In-State Rival

AUBURN, Alabama – You never like to lose. You especially never like to lose to "them"...in any sport at any time at any venue. Suffering only its second loss in its last eight games the Alabama Crimson Tide men's basketball team gave up 54 second half points en route to an 84-64 drubbing by Auburn at Auburn Arena on Saturday afternoon, The Tigers went on a 24-7 tear to pull away for the lop-sided victory.

"[Yesterday's] game was unlike any game that we've had recently," University of Alabama men's basketball head coach Avery Johnson said. "In our recent games, especially in SEC play, when things are closely contested, we have been the type of team that has the mental and physical stamina, and the team that makes the better decisions in the second half to give ourselves a chance to win. That didn't happen [yesterday]. This was probably the one of the worst defensive halves that I've seen. Give (Auburn) credit for executing on both ends of the floor more than we did. They deserved to win."

The game was a battle during the first half. Bama had the lead, in fact, near the end of the half, but Auburn managed to tie it up at 30 apiece headed into the locker room. Then with the start of the second half also came the first lead of the game for the Tigers on a Horace Spencer jumper. It took several minutes for Bama to recover to retake the lead 45-44 on a Dazon Ingram layup with 11:43 remaining. In just over two minutes following that score the game changed hands six times and was tied four times until the hot hands of the Tigers took over to take the contest out of the reach of the boys from Bama.

The Crimson Tide hit 41 percent from the field and 29 percent from beyond the arc, while the Tigers dropped in 50 percent from the floor and 62 percent from three-point land. Auburn finished the game 28-of-42 from the foul line and 11-of-18 from the foul line. Bama was 10-of-19 from the foul line.

Leading the Bama offense was freshman Braxton Key with 18 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Riley Norris was the only other Crimson Tide player to score in double figures with 10. Graduate senior Bola Olaniyan put on one of his best performances dropping in seven points and 11 rebounds, with eight of those rebounds coming off the offensive boards.

Alabama will travel to Athens, Georgia on Wednesday night to take on the Georgia Bulldogs, with an 8 p.m. CT tip off. The game will be broadcast ESPNU.
