Overtime Win Big For Bama

It was a thrilling overtime victory for the Alabama Crimson Tide men's basketball team as they defeated the Mississippi State Bulldogs 82-80 at Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville, Mississippi last night. Senior guard RETIN OBASOHAN pumped in 25 points in the win, as well as recording a career-best eight assists. The victory gives Bama a six-game win streak against the Dogs, tying the longest in the series back in 1985-87. The win also gives the Tide four wins out of the last five trips at State.

The Crimson Tide had four players in double figures for the evening. Of course the 25 points for Obasohan, which was his fifth consecutive 20-pointer and 10th of the season, led the contest. He was followed by sophomore forward RILEY NORRIS with 16 points, JUSTIN COLEMAN off the bench with 15 points and senior guard ARTHUR EDWARDS with 12 points.

Of course Alabama head coach AVERY JOHNSON was still pumped following the game. "First, I want to say, what a hard fought game," he said. "Mississippi State battled all night. We got off to a great start tonight and they weathered the storm. Then, when it was our turn to fight back and get through a down cycle in the game we did that to finish the game strong. Fortunately, they missed some free throws just like we missed a few. We were pretty good in overtime. We got some stops, a lot of contributions from a lot of different players. Obviously, Retin (Obasohan) lead us again and he's been playing like `Superman' for us. He just gets stronger as the game goes on. Justin Coleman helped us out tonight, JIMMIE TAYLOR had some more energy, Arthur Edwards came alive in the second half, Riley (Norris) made a timely three for us, so just a great team effort. These overtimes have been pretty good for us this year. Again, Mississippi State fought hard and we fought hard. Fortunately, for us we've had a lot of these games and I'm glad we were able to pull through."

State began the overtime period knocking down two straight for four points, but Bama was able to tie the score at 73-73 before adding another three to lead the OT 76-74 with 2:05 remaining on a three-pointer. The Dogs again hit another bucket to tie the score before Coleman hit another deep shot. Then the Tide was able to ride the foul shots to victory, hitting three-out-of-four in the last nine seconds to take the win.

Alabama shot 46.6 percent (27-58) while Mississippi State shot 46.5 percent (33-71) from the floor. Rebounding totals were separated by only one, with the Tide grabbing the most, 40-39. Turnovers were a different matter, however, as Bama lost the ball a whopping 20 times as compared to just 12 by State.

Next up for the Crimson Tide will be a home game with the Missouri Tigers this Saturday, February 6th. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on the SEC Network.

It's National Signing Day

It's National Signing Day "season."

The day has become almost like a season of its own. All year coaches, and even the players, talk with high school-hopefuls about their college choice of where to play the game they love so much. Film is reviewed, visits to games are made, parents are met, on-campus visits are scheduled and made...and all during a significant portion of the year.

Then it all comes down to the one day. Today.

Though the Crimson Tide picked up a couple of commitments from the state of Mississippi the last two days, today is the day you actually get to count them...along with the others. Yesterday evening, however, Alabama lost one.Tight end Brendan Scales out of Ballwin, Missouri decided to stay closer to home and attend Missouri instead of UA. A total of 17 have made a firm commitment to the Crimson Tide as of the time of this writing, the four a.m. hour. Bama is expected to keep all who have committed, and to pick up a few more today in the process.

The blog will be updated throughout the day as announcements are made concerning those who have actually signed their national letter of intent.

Roll Tide!
