Historical. Exciting. Riveting. Grand. Marvelous.

All of the words above describe the performance last night of the University of Alabama gymnastics team. The belles from Bama took second place to advance to the NCAA Championships Super Six Team Final last night in Fort Worth, Texas. The second place finish for the Tide at their semifinal session came with a score of 197.3875. Bama has been to 22 of the 24 NCAA Super Six Team Finals which is the most in collegiate gymnastics history.

Alabama gymnastics head coach Dana Duckworth said, "We wanted to start strong, stay strong and finish strong and the team embraced everything we talked about. Not only this week trusting themselves but believing in one another and having fun."

The top three teams from the two Friday semifinal sessions advance to today's team finals. Taking first place was the Oklahoma Sooners, followed by ALABAMA in second and UCLA taking third. Earlier in the day in the other semifinal it was Florida first, LSU in second and Georgia taking third.

Duckworth continued, "You never take making it to the Super Six and competing for a national championship for granted. We can't wait until tomorrow (Saturday)."

Katie Bailey took the individual vault championship with a 9.95 score. This was Alabama's 26th individual NCAA title and fifth on the vault. Also scoring high on the vault were Mackenzie Brannan (9.9125) and Lauren Beers (9.9).

On the uneven bars the Tide scored a 49.3125 on the strength of Bailey's 9.9 and Brannan's 9.8875. On the balance beam Bama scored 49.300 led by sophomore Kiana Winston with a 9.9 and junior Aja Sims with a 9.8875. On the floor exercise the overall team score was 49.2875 led by a 9.9 from Winson and a 9.8625 from Bailey and senior Carley Sims.

The Crimson Tide will start the Super Six Team Final on a bye, then begin competition on the floor exercise, followed by the vault, a second bye and then finish on the uneven bars and balance beam.

Competition gets underway tonight at 8 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on ESPNU. It will also be streamed on WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app.

Softball Beats Texas A&M In Series Opener 8-3

The Alabama Crimson Tide softball team (37-7, 9-4 SEC) is hot. As in putting the heat on opponents with an offense that can and does score. Bama bats knocked in three home runs last night to take the series opener with Texas A&M 8-3 last night in College Station, Texas. Bama's gals have scored at least seven runs in each of their last six games, as well as at least seven runs in seven of their last nine Southeastern Conference wins.

Seven of Alabama's eight runs last nigh came via the Alabama ladies banging the homers, including a grand slam by Haylie McCleney and two additional long balls by Leona Lafaele. This was the third grand slam for McCleney in her Crimson career. This was Lafaele's second multi-home run game of the season. Regan Dykes extended her hitting streak to a team-leading 10 games by going one for three last night, and Chandler Dare also extended a personal hitting streak to six games.

Alabama pitcher Sydney Littlejohn (17-2) is credited with the win and remains undefeated in SEC play. She pitched for 5.1 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and five strikeouts. Closing was Alexis Osorio with 1.2 innings.

The Alabama Crimson Tide baseball team was shut out for the second time this season as Bama fell to the eighth-ranked Ole Miss Rebels 4-0 last night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The Tide drops to 20-14 overall on the season and 6-7 in Southeastern Conference play.

Alabama head baseball coach Mitch Gaspard said, "The last two Fridays Geoffrey (Bramblett) has certainly pitched well enough to win. He gave us the long start and pitched extremely well, and I thought it was one of his better outings. He's done a hell of a job for us on Fridays, giving us an opportunity to win each time out."

Bramblett (6-2) put in 7.0 innings of work, allowing only one unearned run on two hits and three walks with eight punchouts.

Concerning Ole Miss starter Brady Bramlett, Gaspard said, "(Brady) Bramlett was equally as good tonight. He did a really nice job. We had two opportunities and on Friday night, and that's about what you get. Those two opportunities, we just weren't able to take advantage of them."

Chandler Avant went two-for-four with a double to lead the Crimson Tide in hitting on the evening. It was his fourth consecutive multi-hit game at home. Chance Vincent and Georgie Salem also had one hit each for Bama. The single by Salem last night extended his hitting streak to six games now.

Alabama and Ole Miss will again take the field this evening at 5 p.m. CT. Righty Jake Walters will take the mound for the Tide while left-hander David Parkinson gets the call for Ole Miss.
