Greatest Names In Bama Football History-Johnny Musso

Still one of the favorite players to ever don the Crimson and White, running back Johnny Musso is our next greatest name in Bama football history. Musso was born on March 6, 1950, and played running back for UA  under legendary head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant.

His college nickname, The Italian Stallion, was a combination of his Italian heritage and his great running ability. During his playing days Musso weighed in at 205 pounds and stood and even six feet tall. Musso has been described as a "bulldozing blocker and breakaway runner." He was named an All-American in both the 1970 and 1971 football seasons.

Musso led the Southeastern Conference in rushing two years and in scoring (100 points) in 1971. He set a school record for rushing touchdowns (34) that lasted 28 years. His career rushing yardage, 2,742, was a school record for several years. Musso's big games included 221 yards against Auburn in 1970 and four touchdowns against Florida in 1971.

Selected by the Chicago Bears in Round 3 of the NFL Draft in 1975, he played professional football for the Bears, as well as the BC Lions of the Canadian Football League and the Birmingham Vulcans of the World Football League. He ran for 1029 yards in 1973 and 681 yards in 1985.

Musso was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1989, and elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000.

Cam Akers Becomes 6th 2017 Football Commit

The Crimson Tide football program has picked up another major commitment. Yesterday running back prospect Cam Akers verbally committed to Bama during an unofficial visit and becomes the sixth 2017 commit. In fact, he was able to commit in person with Alabama head football coach Nick Saban.

In a statement tweeted yesterday, Akers said, "Right now, 'Bama just feels right. I wanted to get this out of the way because I do not want my decision to be a distraction to my coaches and teammates as we prepare for the upcoming season."

The 5' 10.5", 208-pounder is an overall athlete, able to play  running back or wide receiver. He even plays quarterback for Clinton High School in Mississippi at times. The word is he'll be used at his true position, running back, for the Tide.

247Sports lists him as the number five running back in the country, and number 54 overall player.

How sold on Bama is he? He says he'll try to get some of his friends on board.
