What Saban Said On 'Hey Coach'

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban last night talked about a variety of things, both from questions from the host as well as from the callers. Saban talked Texas A&M, Netflix and Ms. Terry, injuries and more.

Start out with a little fun and light talk. Nick and Ms. Terry do have a normal home life. Well, a normal home life for a coach and his wife. Saban said that they the two do enjoy finding a show on Netflix to watch when he has some down time.

Turning to the Crimson Tide, Saban said that Bama does continue to improve defensively. He said he believes that there is good leadership on the team this year, and believes there are some quiet leaders that set a good example.

Saban said that even though the defense has played a little better in the last two games, he still believes that the Tide is still a little work in progress as far as continuity.

Saban said that this week's Southeastern Conference opponent, Texas A&M, has "a really good team." Concerning the loss to UCLA, coach said that there were around 10 plays in the fourth quarter that could have given the Aggies the win if they had made any of those plays, thus making A&M an undefeated 5-0 team going into this week's contest.

Concerning the injury to Miller Forristall, Saban said the young man is doing fine after surgery, and is very encouraged Forristall will have a full recovery. Saban further stated that the injury to Forristall will not change Alabama's usage of the tight end.

Speaking of tight ends, Saban said that the two tight ends that have played the most, Irv Smith and Hale Hentges, have played very well thus far into the season.

Saban commented that he has heard that former Alabama head football coach Gene Stallings is doing well after his heart attack.

Concerning UA punter JK Scott, Saban said his statistics as a punter are unprecedented. Saban also said he's happy with Bama's kickoff coverage, and that on an average the Tide's opponents are starting around their own 15-yard line.

One of the things Saban said could be a big factor in this game is turnovers. He commented that Texas A&M creates a lot of turnovers. He said the Tide practices for turnovers, and that there are seven or eight of those turnover drills and that the players hate them...but that he loves them.

Saban said it's important for the players not to feel "entitled" based on their success. He said the biggest challenge is keeping the players "laser focused."

Concerning the Aggies third down play, Saban said that A&M has run the ball 22 times on third down plays which is "very unusual." He further stated that some teams will have thrown the ball 45 times on third down and run the ball only four times or so.

Commenting on overall play against Vanderbilt and Ole Miss, Saban said that the Tide played better against the Rebels than the Commodores, making fewer errors. He further stated that there were numerous plays against Ole Miss which could have been executed better by Bama.

Saban said that this game with Ole Miss was going to be a challenging game for the Crimson Tide. He also commented that this as well as the LSU venue were the two toughest road atmospheres in the SEC West.
