Bama Soccer Takes Overtime Win

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – Anyone remember the A-Team? The unflappable leader of the A-Team was character by the name of Hannibal Smith. He had a saying, "I love it when a plan comes together." The University of Alabama women's soccer team worked the plan, and the plan came together as the Crimson Tide won its third consecutive Southeastern Conference game for the first time since 2013, defeating Missouri 3-2 in overtime on Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Soccer Complex.
Just 53 seconds into the extra period, Tide junior Abbie Boswell netted the penalty kick to give Bama (11-6-1, 3-5-1 SEC) the win over Mizzou (6-11-1, 2-7-0 SEC). Incidentally, that kick gave UA the first win in Tuscaloosa over UM in program history.
Alabama soccer head coach Wes Hart said, "It was an interesting game. We were a little bit flat today. I think we gave so much in the Arkansas game on Thursday night that we looked flat. Then, of course, Mizzou's a good team. They have so many attacking weapons. We ended up being a little bit too conservative, I think. We had a hard time joining the attack. We had so many numbers in the back to deal with [Jessica] Johnson, [Sarah] Luebbert, [Savannah] Trujillo and [Kaitlyn] Clark. They are just so good on the attacking side that I think it forced us into kind of a defensive shell. That's really what hurt us, but credit to our team for finding a way to get a result."
Boswell led the Bama offense was led by Abbie Boswell, scoring a pair of goals for the third time this season. Senior Alexis Mouton also added a goal of her own to help in the victory.
Missouri outshot Alabama 20-12, but the Tide earned seven corner kicks to just one for Missouri. UA goalkeeper Kat Stratton came through for Bama with a conference-high seven saves picking up her third SEC win of the season.
Alabama will be back in action this Thursday, October 26th battling Ole Miss. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT in Oxford, Mississippi.
