Is It Down To Hurts & Barnett?
Or Just Jalen Hurts?

There was a little buzz in the sporting media yesterday and last evening, especially those who focus on The University of Alabama. That's whether or not they are actual "fans" of the Crimson Tide. That buzz is the sound of quarterback changes that might be a-comin'. Several outlets are reporting that the quarterback race is now down to two, true freshman Jalen Hurts and Blake Barnett (who many have expected to win the coveted slot.)

However, there are also reports that seem to have their origins in Tuscaloosa that say that Jalen Hurts is the man, that he will indeed be Alabama's next starting quarterback.

A series of tweets yesterday by Shannon B. Terry @sbterry247, founder of Rivals.com and 247Sports.com indicates that Hurts, at least eventually, will start. His tweets came about in the 1 o'clock hour (CT) so check them out. Basically he's saying that Bateman's stock seems to be dropping this fall while Hurts' is going up. He did mention, in a second tweet, that the coaches had to figure out the best way to develop the young man. But Terry didn't declare him the winner of the moment, but he did, however, state that he believed Hurts would be the starter by mid-season.

Checking over on BamaHammer.com and writer Chris Hale, he says that Terry is usually on the money when it comes to things-Crimson Tide. I say that speaks volumes. Stephen M. Smith of TouchdownAlabama.net is reporting that sources close to the team have told him that head coach Nick Saban will be naming Hurts as the starter.

Alabama has been off the past two days getting a well-deserved rest. The Tide hits the practice field again this afternoon.

The No. 1-ranked Crimson Tide takes on the 17th-ranked USC Trojans in the season opener on Saturday, September 3rd in the AdvoCare Classic. Game time is 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast live on ABC.

The University of Alabama men's basketball team has been turning the heads of recruits since the arrival of head coach Avery Johnson's. Another big-time player is taking a look at the Crimson Tide to further his basketball career, and has included Bama in his newly-released Top 10.

Five-star shooting guard Collin Sexton, the 26th-rated player in the ESPN 100, has narrowed his list of schools to ten. He has listed Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia Tech, Iowa State, Kansas, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Oklahoma State and Villanova. (Anyone else notice that Kentucky and Duke are missing from that list?)

He plan is to take all of his official visits in the fall and making a decision before his senior season begins.

University of Alabama head swimming and diving coach Dennis Pursley announced a promotion of sorts for one of his assistants. Make that former assistant. Lisa Ebeling, a member of Pursley's staff for four years now has been named the new head coach at Northern Colorado.

Pursley said, "Lisa has played an integral role in our program's development during the past four years and we are certainly going to miss her. At the same time, we are happy for Lisa because this is the perfect career move for her."

Of course this leaves the Tide short one assistant coach, so a national search for Ebeling's replacement will begin immediately. In addition to serving as assistant, Ebeling served as the recruiting coordinator for the Crimson Tide women's program.

Ebeling said, "I'm extremely proud and grateful to have been a part of the Alabama swimming and diving family for the past four years and to have had a part in rebuilding this program into a national power. I am excited for the opportunity to use the knowledge I have gained with the Crimson Tide to help build a winning tradition at Northern Colorado."

Every so often Rivals, as well as other recruiting service, will reassess its rankings of high school football players. Different factors play a role in determining that change. One such realignment has taken place.

Yesterday Rivals announced a change in their Top 100, and University of Alabama commit Najee Harris has moved to the top of the pile. Harris has been committed to the Crimson Tide for more than a year now.

Mike Farrell of Rivals stated that Harris is "the best running back prospect I've seen since Leonard Fournette and in the discussion with former high school greats like Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch, Bryce Brown, Jonathan Stewart and others."

Other Alabama commits making a move on the Rivals Top 100:

+ Offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood out of Pensacola, Florida has moved up to a five-star prospect.
+ Receiver Jerry Jeudy from Deerfield Beach, Florida is now a five-start prospect.
+ Former top recruit and five-star linebacker Dylan Moses out of Baton Rouge, Louisiana is now listed as a four-star.

Former University of Alabama head baseball coach Mitch Gaspard has been named as an assistant coach at Kansas State. His official title will be that of associate head coach/offensive coordinator, according to coach Brad Hill.

Gaspard stated, "With my background and experience, I am looking forward to helping Brad in any way that I can, being back on the recruiting trail and, most importantly, developing young men as not only baseball players but also preparing them for success after the game. Kim and I loved Manhattan on our visit, and we look forward to a new beginning at K-State."

Gaspard was the Crimson Tide head coach from 2010-16, posting a record of 234-193. He resigned after last season saying it was time for a change.
