The University of Alabama soccer team opened the 2016-17 season in fine style with a 5-0 victory over Sam Houston State last night. After over an hour of sitting out a weather delay, the Bama women rolled over the Bearkats, with four different scorers and outshooting by a margin of 36-3.

Alabama head soccer coach Wes Hart said, "I am very pleased with our performance tonight. Every player on the team contributed to the win. I am happy to say Emma Welch was dangerous all night long and scored for the second time in three games. Lacey Clarida continued her goal scoring streak dating back to last spring, and she has scored in her last eight games. Tori Gann was excellent. We used Tori a lot last year as a reserve to come into games and bring energy. Tonight she was called upon to start due to an injury and she did not disappoint. We will enjoy this victory for the next few hours, and then our focus will shift to Sunday and Murray State."

Leading the charge on offense, sophomore Tori Gann registered two goals on the day, both of which came in the first half. The other three goal scorers included senior Auburn Mercer, sophomore Emma Welch and junior Lacey Clarida.

Alabama will host the Murray State Racers tomorrow night at the Alabama Soccer Complex beginning at 6 p.m. CT.

Snake Stabler's Number Retired At Foley High School

This is where the legend really began. This is where he earned the nickname, The Snake

This is Foley High School in Foley, Alabama. This is where legendary Crimson Tide quarterback Kenny "Snake" Stabler came into prominence for the first time. This was where those who enjoyed his high school glory days knew this was a man, a football player destined for greatness.

Friday night Foley High School did something it has never done before. The school system and high school retired a former player's number. The number 12, worn by Snake from 1961 through 1963 on the gridiron there is now off the market for all future players. Current player Garrett Mayo is the last to wear the enshrined number.

Several members of Stabler's family were on hand for the ceremony held last night. Besides the retiring of the number 12, a Hometown Hall of Famer program was presented by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Ford Motor Company.

Stabler of course went on to play his college ball at The University of Alabama for legendary head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. He then played professional football in the NFL for several teams, the most-notable of which were the Oakland Raiders.

Addressing the crowd last night, Alexa Stabler-Adams said, "I've never played a down of football in my life, but I do know how special this place was to our dad. Foley was home. Foley gave Dad the skills to perform at the highest level. It gave Dad the relationships that carried him to Tuscaloosa, to Oakland, to New Orleans, to Houston and, ultimately, back here.

"Dad had the opportunity to live in some of the greatest cities in this country, but at the end of it, he always came home, and, ultimately, he chose to rest in peace here in Foley, and I think that speaks volumes of what a special place this is."

The retiring of Stabler's number 12 jersey took place between the first and second quarters, with The Hometown Hall of Famer program taking place as part of the halftime festivities.

Richard Moyer of Moyer Ford presented a plaque to Foley High School principal Ross Moore for permanent display at the school, which made FHS an official high school of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The engraved plaque contains a likeness of Stabler's Hall of Fame bust above the heading "Ken Stabler, Foley, Alabama, Hometown Hall of Famer". From there it goes on to list the highlights of Stabler's quarterbacking career.

Concerning the video of the Hall of Fame ceremony that played at halftime, Kendra Stabler Moyes said, "I cry now when I think about. That was heart-wrenching, but so amazing because I know my Dad was watching, and he would have been so proud.

"The Pro Football Hall of Fame treated us like family from the get-go, and we took advantage of every single moment there. We had the time of our lives and we partied like my Dad would and we enjoyed ourselves and we took it all in. I think we represented for him really well."
