Top-Ranked Alabama Faces USC On Saturday

It won't be long now. Only a few days separates us from University of Alabama Crimson Tide football. Finally the Tide will be back on the field of battle. And the preparation for USC continues. The Tide practiced in full pads yesterday for approximately two hours inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility.

Linebacker Josh McMillon was back hard at practice yesterday. This is second day back following the funeral of a family member.

Two players were again seen in the black, non-contact jerseys. Defensive back Nigel Knott and offensive lineman Richie Petitbon did, however, practice.

Backup right guard Alphonse Taylor watched practice from the sidelines. Though dressed, he wasn't wearing the leg braces and pads the others sported. Taylor was found not guilty yesterday of driving under the influence which stemmed from a charge back in July.

Quarterbacks were hard at it, and during the media viewing period worked on short-yardage passing situations.

Yesterday was practice number 26 of 28 scheduled practices of the fall. After just two more the team will board the jet and head to Arlington, Texas for the AdvoCare Classic to kick off the 2016 season with the USC Trojans. Alabama is ranked No. 1 in most polls, while USC comes in at No. 17/20 according to whichever poll you use. The game will be played at AT&T Stadium, with a 7 p.m. CT game time set. ABC will broadcast the game, with Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Samantha Ponder calling the contest.

Today's practice begins at 3:30 p.m. CT.

Crimson Tide Soccer Heading For The Sunshine State

The University of Alabama soccer team is heading southeast for a trip state of Florida for two road contests scheduled over the next three days. Alabama begins their two matchups Tampa, Florida tomorrow (Thursday) evening, September 1st to do battle with 20th-ranked South Florida at 6 p.m. CT. The Crimson Tide will then make their way to Fort Meyers, Florida for a contest on Sunday, September 4th. Alabama will take on Florida Gulf Coast for a noon CT kickoff.

You can watch for updates via Twitter by following @Alabama Soccer.

The Crimson Tide soccer team is sitting pretty in more ways than one. Bama is 4-0 on the young season, the best start since 2012 when the Tide opened the season at 5-0. Alabama has now scored a total of 14 goals this season, also the most since 2012 when they opened with 16 that year. Last season the Crimson Tide only scored a total of two goals through it's first four games, and didn't hit the 14th until later in the year, October 23rd in a contest with the Missouri Tigers (the 17th of the year).

The Crimson Tide ranks in the top 10 in four major offensive categories after only two weekends of play. Bama ranks fourth in shots per game, averaging 26.5. The Tide is sixth in total goals scored with 14. Bama also ranks sixth in total points with 40, and is ranked eighth in assists with 12.

The Bama gals lead the SEC in six offensive as well as two defensive categories after the first two weekends of play. Alabama's offense leads the league in shots (106), goals (14), assists (12), points (40), goals per game (3.50) and assists per game (3.0). The Tide also boasts league-leading numbers in shutouts (3) and goals allowed (2). Lacey Clarida and Abbie  Boswell lead the league in game-winning goals (3) and assists (5), respectively. Boswell also leads the Southeastern Conference in assists per game (1.25), while Clarida is second in points (13), points per game (3.25), goals (6) and goals per game (1.50). Alabama has now racked up a total of 33 corner kicks, which ties for third with the Texas A&M Aggies and South Carolina Gamecocks.

The squad is showing dramatic improvement in the second season under head coach  Wes Hart.

It's Opening-Game Week For Alabama

The University of Alabama football team has officially kicked off its game week schedule and preparations for its season opener with 20th-ranked USC yesterday afternoon. Prior to the two-hour practice session in full pads, head coach Nick Saban and select players met with the media at noon CT. The Crimson Tide practiced in full pads at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility.

Practice one of game-week prep is down, with three more to follow before the Crimson Tide jets to Arlington, Texas to play the Trojans in the AdvoCare Classic on Saturday, September 3rd. Game time is scheduled for7 p.m. CT at AT&T Stadium with the Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Sam Ponder handling the announcing duties on the ABC Network.

It was Cooper Bateman, Blake Barnett and then Jalen Hurts in the quarterback line yesterday.  David Cornwell participated but was not on the field the entire time.

The only two players still spotted in black, no-contact/limited-contact jerseys were defensive back Nigel Knott and offensive lineman Richie Petitbon.

Junior Bradley Bozeman and sophomore Ross Pierschbacher are settling in nicely to their new positions on the offensive line. Pierschbacher was moved from left guard to center to replace departed Rimington award-winner Ryan Kelly, where he has been playing all spring and summer...until last Friday. He has now been moved to the position vacated by Bozeman...right guard. (See related Nick Saban press conference story.)

Concerning the center-right guard switch, Pierschbacher said, "It's really whatever the coaches want. I told them I’m willing to do whatever it takes for us to put the best unit out there that we can come USC. If that’s best for the team then that’s in my best interest, too."

Pierschbacher also mentioned he was informed of the move this past Friday in a meeting with the coaches. He commented there really wasn't much information given. "It really wasn’t a competition at center, it really was more of what’s the best combination of guys for us to play," Saban commented. "That’s kind of how it is."

The Crimson Tide will practice three more times this week before traveling to Texas on Friday.

Nick Saban Meets With Press Monday

Crimson Tide Football Head Coach Nick Saban

University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban met with the media prior to yesterday's afternoon practice.

In his opening statement Saban said, "Well, we're excited for game week, and we are excited and our players are excited as well to have the opportunity to play a great program with great tradition like the University of Southern California. This is always sort of a bowl-like atmosphere when you play in these first neutral-site games, and I know our players are very excited about it. Opening-game success comes more from an internal scoreboard in terms of where are and if we are doing the things we need to do to play winning football. Are we getting the kind of attention to detail, discipline, focus, so that when you sit down at the end of the day you say regardless of what the score was good bad, or indifferent: Did I play to my standard?; Did we play to our standard?; Are we doing things relative to the standard that we have created for each individual player?;  For my unit?; For our units? You measure yourself based on that, not what anybody else thinks or anyone else says, and I think that is really, really important for our football players and our football team, especially at this point, because there is no identity at all. Regardless of what has been said, voted on our anything else, it means nothing in terms of what we need to try and create as an identity as a football team.

"Southern Cal has an outstanding team. Clay Helton has been there for a good while, and they have been very productive offensively under him. They have nine starters back on offense, which makes them a very good offensive team. They have good runners, JuJu Smith-(Schuster) is one of the best receivers we're going to play against all year. Their offensive line has a bunch of starters between them and they are very quality football players. They have been able to run the ball effectively against most people that they have played, so I know they have a new quarterback, but he is a very talented guy and I'm sure he'll do a great job for them. Defensively, our word is that they are much improved. They have a new coordinator, and he has done a good job with these players. They have an influx of new players, so they have some very talented guys on special teams as well. They have a great returner who is very explosive in the kicking game, so this is going to be another area that is very challenging for us.

"I think this game will be a challenge for us in many many ways in terms of who we are playing as well as who we are, in terms of what we need to do. From a quarterback standpoint – which I know is the first question you are going to ask – we are sort of down to two guys here. Cooper Bateman and Blake Barnett are probably the two guys were getting ready to play in this game and that is the way it's going to be for right now. We are going to try to continue to develop all of our guys, and we make this choice with what is going to give us the best chance to win this game, and it's also about future development of our players. We want to play the guy that's most ready and will give us the best chance, but we also want to develop guys that can compete at this position in the future, and that's kind of where it is right now. So, there is really nothing else to talk about or nothing else to say (in regards to quarterbacks). I know they are going to give you a depth chart, which you guys will just absolutely love. I know that it used to be we created the depth chart, now you create the depth chart based on what you think, so that's okay too. Just know that what you think doesn't count."

Saban also made the comment that "there is no identity" with Alabama at this point. The coach always likes for a team to establish their own identity each season.

The top two running backs to begin the season are really no surprise, though due to past injury issues the others will need to be ready to go. Saban named Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris as the two he'll be looking to in the season-opener with USC.

Then change-up noticed in the last three practice sessions will now stay as is. Saban said Bradley Bozeman will play the center position and Ross Piersbacher will be at right guard. "It really wasn’t a competition at center, it really was more of what’s the best combination of guys for us to play," Saban commented. "That’s kind of how it is."

Saban said the position change wasn’t so much about Pierschbacher losing the center job as it was putting the best five players in the best situation to make an impact along Alabama’s offensive line.

Now, as far as which of the two quarterbacks Saban named will start this Saturday remains to be seen. That may be a game-time decision. Saban is still looking for that certain something from the quarterbacks to make it clear who is ready to get the start.  "There is no perfect way to do it," he said.

Three. Now there are three.

The University of Alabama Crimson Tide soccer team has recorded its third shutout of the young season 1-0 yesterday afternoon over the Chattanooga Mocs  at the Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Tide has recorded a shutout in three of it's first four contests of the season. It's just the second time in fifteen years that a Bama soccer team has won at least four games to begin a season. The last time was in 2012 when the Tide started the season at 5-0.

The lone score of the game came early in the 47th minute of the second half. Junior Lacey Clarida was the Bama player putting the ball through for the Crimson Tide. Clarida scored from six yards out off a cross from teammate sophomore Abbie Boswell. It was the sixth goal of the season for Clarida, and her 13th career goal.

Junior Kat Stratton picked up a save between the posts. That improves her overall record between the posts to 4-0.

For the contest, Clarida had 2 shots, 1 shot on goal and one goal. Boswell had four shots, two shots on goal and one assist. Jordan Meier took three shots with one shot on goal. Emma Welch recorded two shots, two shots on goal.

On the day, Alabama led in overall shots (18-3), shots on goal (7-2) and corner kicks (5-0).

Alabama improved to 4-0 while Chattanooga fell to 1-3 on the season.

The Tide travels to Tampa, Florida this Thursday, September 1st to battle No. 23 South Florda. Match time is 6 p.m. CT. Bama then takes on Florida Gulf Coast (FGCU) on Sunday, September 4th. Match time with FGCU is noon CT.

The Tide practiced in full pads yesterday for approximately two hours. Starting right guard Alphonse Taylor was in a regular jersey, no longer donning the black, no-contact jersey. Bama head coach Nick Saban says Taylor is "day-to-day" but hasn't really said what the problem seems to be. Bradley

Bozeman was again in the center position while Ross Pierschbacher lined up at right guard. This was the second practice that change has been in effect.

Having begin practice season in a black, non-contact jersey, running back Ronnie Clark was in a regular jersey at yesterday's session.

Redshirt freshman linebacker Joshua McMillon was again nowhere to be seen for a second consecutive day.

Game week work begins tomorrow for preparation for the offensive and defensive schemes worked out by the Alabama coaching staff focusing on the proclivities of the Southern California football team. Bill Battle Reminds Fans Of New Bag Policy For Bryant-Denny

University of Alabama Director of Athletics Bill Battle is reminding everyone of the new bag policy for Bryant-Denny Stadium. Though Alabama's opener this Saturday will be in Arlington, Texas where the NFL bag policy will be in effect for those attending the game, he felt now would be a good time to remind everyone of the new rules for attending a University of Alabama home game.

Earlier this summer, UA announced the implementation of a new clear bag policy for all football games at Bryant-Denny Stadium, with the University having modified its security policy by limiting the size and style of bags allowed into the stadium, all done in the interest of improved safety for everyone entering the facility.

The press release concerning the policy read: Prohibited bags include, but are not limited to, the following: all purses, bags or containers larger than a small clutch purse (4 1/2" x 6 1/2"), coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, luggage of any kind, computer bags, camera bags, binocular cases (binoculars may be worn around the neck), diaper bags and seat cushions with pockets zippers or compartments.

To be approved for entry into the stadium, bags or purses must be clear plastic, vinyl or PVC, and cannot exceed 12 inches x 6 inches x 12 inches in size. Small, one-compartment, clutch purses that do not exceed 4 1/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches (with or without a handle or strap) also will be permitted. All bags will be subject to inspection at the gate and may be subject to additional inspection inside the stadium.

An exception will be made for medical necessary items after proper inspection at specified stadium gates. All ticketed guests (except North/South Zone, North/South Field Suite, & students) needing medical bag exceptions must enter through Gate 8 or Gate 44. If you have a medical bag exception and have a North Zone/North Field Suite ticket, you must enter at Gate 3. If you have a medical bag exception and have a South Zone/South Field Suite, or student ticket, you must enter at Gate 27.

The University of Alabama thanks each and every fan attending the game for adhering to the new policy, and to be prepared for the inspection in order to keep things smooth and orderly.

Remember that for the opening game with USC, the NFL bag policy will be in effect since the game is being played in an NFL venue.

It's the second shutout of the young season for The Alabama Crimson Tide soccer team. Junior Lacey Clarida and sophomore Abbie Boswell each popped a pair of goals to help lead the Bama soccer team (3-0) to a 4-0 victory over the Campbell Fighting Camels (2-1) last night at the Alabama Soccer Complex.

The Crimson Tide now improves their overall record to 3-0. This is the first time since the 2012 season that Alabama has started the season with three match victories.

Alabama head soccer coach Wes Hart was pleased with his team's overall performance, saying, "I think there is a genuine belief within the team that we can score goals. Lacey and Abbie are doing a great job of putting the ball in the back of the net, and I think those two have really shown the ability, attitude and mentality to go score goals. Once we settled into [last night's] game we were okay, but the first couple minutes were shaky as we came up with a huge save early from Kat Stratton. Her save kind of sparked the team, and after that first minute or two we kind of found our way. It's a different game if she (Stratton) doesn't make that save early. She came up with the save when we needed it rather than having to crawl our way back from a 1-0 deficit to start the game."

The Tide led 3-0 going into the half, then came back to record another goal in the second on eight shots.

Boswell commented, "I think we had the right mentality. We just work really hard in practice and I think it paid off tonight. Our defense did really well [last night], and I think it helps a lot offensively when we pitch a shutout on defense."

Next up for the Tide is a trip to Chattanooga, Tennessee to do battle with the Chattanooga Mocs. The game is set for tomorrow at noon CT at Finley Soccer Stadium.

Bama Baseball's Cobie Vance Is Recognized

Cobie Vance

Baseball America has selected University of Alabama sophomore baseball player Cobie Vance as the fourth-best player in the Texas Collegiate League for summer 2016. He played 38 games for the Acadiana Cane Cutters, ranking seventh in the league in batting with a .303 average (44-145). He hit six doubles, two triples with 22 RBIs and scored 23 runs. In addition he had nine stolen bases and 16 walks.

Of Vance, Baseball America said, "Alabama’s everyday second baseman as a freshman this spring, Vance showed some impressive versatility over the summer with Acadiana, handling himself well at second base, third base and shortstop. An unsigned 16th-round pick in 2015, he stands just 5-foot-8 and while he doesn’t have any flashy tools, he can do a lot of things well. Vance shows a discerning eye at the plate and has a knack for being a pesky out. He makes plenty of contact, and although he’s not a burner, he’s fast enough to be a threat on the bases, stealing nine in 38 games in the TCL while batting .303/.376/.372."

This past season Vance was one of just two Bama players to start every contest, finishing the season second in hits, with 58, and walks with 25.

Crimson Tide Football Continues Prep Work

The University of Alabama football team continues its march toward its September 3rd season-opening date by working out for two hours in shells (helmets, shoulder pads, shorts) yesterday afternoon at the Thomas-Drew Practice Fields.

Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban rewarded a trio of hard-working walk-ons at the conclusion of the Friday practice. Saban announced to the team that walk-ons Truett Harris (Senior TE, Brentwood, Tenn.), Brandon Moore (Senior TE, Cincinnati, Ohio) and Levi Wallace (Junior DB, Tucson, Ariz.) have been awarded scholarships.

During the media view period it should be noted that, while Blake Barnett was at the session, it was Cooper Bateman, Jalen Hurts and David Cornwell doing the work. Bateman and Hurts were throwing to the receivers while Cornwell threw to the tight ends.

Alphonse Taylor has managed to get rid of the black, no-contact jersey and was back practicing.

Receiver Cam Sims is still in the sleeve but is showing progress.

This was Bama's 23rd of 28 scheduled practices before the season-opener with USC on Saturday, Sepember 3rd at the AdvoCare Classic. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Chris Fowler, Kirk Herstreit and Sam Ponder will be handling the call.

Dr. Pepper Guy Makes CFP Selections

You know the guy in those Dr. Pepper commercials? The one that sells Dr. Pepper in the football stadium stands, yet somehow ends up many times on the field or other places one would not normally expect a vendor to appear? The guy that seems to know all the radio and television sports announcers, gurus, analysts or prognosticators?

Larry Culpepper. That guy. The Dr. Pepper spokesman. The guy that invented the college football playoffs and came up with all the [good] rules in college football.

Well, Larry, being the college football expert that he is, has come up with his own four personal picks for who will be in the College Football Playoff games come this season's end. Larry has chosen Alabama, Clemson, LSU and Nebraska. His announcement came on ESPN's College Football Live.

Write it down. Take it to the bank. Put your money on it.

Well, probably best not to do any of the three.

Why Not Ask Nick Saban Who QB Starter Will Be Vs USC?

Crimson Tide Football Head Coach Nick Saban

Oh wait, Alabama head coach Nick Saban HAS been asked which quarterback will start the game when the Crimson Tide takes the field on September 3rd in the season-opener with the USC Trojans.

The problem is, Saban has not yet decided. At least publicly. In fact, he hasn't yet decided if he will use one, two, or any certain number of quarterbacks in the 2016 season-debut of the Crimson Tide football team.

When asked about the starting position, or the possibility of using multiple quarterbacks in the opening contest, Saban said, "We haven't had any discussion about that yet.

Of course that famous impish grin then appeared as reporters continued to ask questions concerning the start. He added, "Like I'd tell you if we were going to."

Speculation has abounded, as it has for the past several seasons, as to who will start in the first game of the year for the Crimson Tide. This season it's a question of Cooper Bateman, Blake Barnett or Jalen Hurts. Many expect, though as you can see not confirmed, that a combination of two of them will participate in the Bama-USC contest.

Saban did say that the time to decide on plan has arrived, commenting, "It's time now that it's judgment day in terms of who we are going to coach and what we are going to do."

Of course Saban is very much aware the interest that abounds by the media as well as the fans concerning the starting position of quarterback. He commented, "I know the only one you guys care to talk about is probably quarterback. It is what it is. We shared the reps with the guys, we tried to give guys a little bit more rhythm in terms of the number of reps they got to see how they respond to it. As of right now, no decision has been made on anyone in particular.

"We're going to continue to do that until somebody sort of takes the bull by the horns and does what we think he needs to do to have a chance to play winning football for us on offense. I'm not disappointed at all in the progress that any of the guys have made, but at the same time, no one has really, I think, sort of forged ahead either."

Saban loves that "bulls by the horn" analogy. How many years now has he used that one?

Alabama kicks off the 2016 season on Saturday, September 3rd in Arlington, Texas in the AdvoCare Classic inside AT&T Stadium with the USC Trojans. Game time is 7 p.m. CT.

Tide Places Nine On Lombardi Award Watch List

Graphic/Photo Credit: RollTide.com

You know, when Academy Awards nominations are announced, the actors selected usually like to use the line, "It's an honor just to be nominated." And I agree with that. It is truly an honor to be nominated to something that showcases your talents, and you get to see how highly-thought of you are to others. But in the case of athlete's on watch lists, you still have to go out there and perform. The performance for actors has already been done.

An honor has been bestowed upon  nine members of The University of Alabama football team. Defensive linemen Jonathan Allen, Da'Shawn Hand, Da'Ron Payne and Dalvin Tomlinson; linebackers Ryan Anderson, Reuben Foster, and Tim Williamstight end O.J. Howard and offensive lineman Cam Robinson have been named to the 2016 Rotary Lombardi Award watch list announced Thursday by the Rotary Club of Houston. Alabama's nine candidates ties with Clemson for the most nominees in the country.

A total of 158 college football players from around the country have been named to the preseason list that now recognizes the nation's top college football player. Back in 1986 Alabama's Cornelius Bennett won the award.

Beginning this year there has been a change in the criteria to be nominated for the Rotary Lombardi Award. Now the award is open to college football players regardless of position, who "demonstrate outstanding performance and skill in offensive or defensive positions and best exemplify the discipline, virtue and wisdom that defined Vincent Lombardi's exceptional brand of leadership." The award is of course named in honor of former Green Bay Packers head coach Vince Lombardi.

Jonathan Allen is considered one of the most productive defenders on the Crimson Tide's defensive. He chose to return for his senior season instead of entering this last NFL Draft. Allen was named to the All-SEC First Team defense by the conference coaches and the Associated Press as a junior after having ranked 17th nationally and second in the SEC in sacks with .80 per game (12.0 sacks). Allen recorded 36 tackles in his junior season with a team-leading 14.5 tackles for loss (-92 yards total) while adding four pass breakups as well as six quarterback hurries. All 12 of his sacks came against Power 5 competition, 11 of which were against ranked teams.

Defensive end Da'Shawn Hand is indeed a skilled pass rusher who has played in 24 career games with 23 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. As a sophomore in 2015, he collected 6.5 tackles for loss (-17 yards) and three sacks (-10 yards) to go with his two quarterback hurries. He was named one of the UA coaching staff's defensive players of the week for his efforts against ULM.

A freshman All-American in 2015, Da'Ron Payne returns as a true heavyweight in the Bama defensive line. He played in all 15 games last season as a true freshman, starting three games at nose guard in the base 3-4 formation. Payne finished the 2015 season with 13 tackles with half a sack and one forced fumble. As last season progressed, Payne worked into a more expanded role along the defensive front.

One of the returning veterans for theTide defensive front, Dalvin Tomlinson serves as a disruptive force that will be looking for a breakout season. Tomlinson has played in 29 total games recording 60 tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks and six pass breakups. He was the first defensive lineman off the bench  to backup the line in 2015,  and led the team with six pass breakups from a down lineman position and added 34 total tackles and four quarterback hurries.

Ryan Anderson will enter his senior season as one of the top pass rushers in the country, as well as one of Bama's most reliable linebackers. He  had 37 tackles last season, with 11.5 of those for a loss (-50), while adding six sacks (-41 yards), two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and nine quarterback hurries.

Reuben Foster returns for 2016 as a senior to anchor the Alabama defense. Foster earned the starting job at inside linebacker a season ago, and finished second on the team with 73 total tackles, eight for a loss (-24 yards), with two sacks (-7 yards), three quarterback hurries and nine pass breakups in 2015.

Tim Williams returns for his senior season, having played in all 15 games as a junior and ranked second on the team with 10.5 sacks (-78 yards) to go with 12.5 tackles for loss (-92 yards), four quarterback hurries and one pass breakup.  Williams recorded 11.0 of his 12.5 tackles for loss (-61 yards) during that time, and added 7.0 of his 10.5 sacks (-60 yards). He was a terror to Tide quarterbacks during practices, scrimmages and back during the spring game.

O.J. Howard begins his senior season with the eyes of Bama Nation, as well as the entire country, upon him presenting himself as one of the most dynamic tight end options in all of college football. He had a break-out game against Clemson in the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship earning MVP honors, and brought in five receptions for a career-high and national championship game high 208 yards and two touchdowns against the Tigers. All five of his catches converted first downs and went for 15-plus yards with a career-long 63-yard reception in the fourth quarter. He recorded an Alabama bowl record in receiving yards in the contest. For the 2015 season, Howard recorded 38 catches for 602 yards and a team-high 15.8 yards per catch average. A total of 24 of his catches converted first downs for the Tide with nine of 20 yards or more.

Cam Robinson has the distinction of being the first true freshman to start at left tackle for Alabama since Andre Smith in 2006.  In fact, he started all 29 games during his two years at the Capstone. One of two returning starters on the Tide's offensive line, Robinson was named to the All-SEC first team by both the conference coaches and the Associated Press following the 2015 season. Robinson had 46 knockdown blocks, ranking third on the team. For his career, Robinson has blocked for 17 100-yard rushers, including 10 in 2015.

The Rotary Lombardi Award has been presented annually since 1970 by the Rotary Club of Houston (Texas). Prior to 2016, the award recognized the top offensive or defensive lineman or linebacker in college football. The award ceremony date is to be announced sometime later this season.
