2011 Football National Championship; Bama Pair Takes U.S. Open Doubles; Stuart Bell New UA President

2011 Football National Championship

Alabama's 14th National Championship in football came in 2011. It was the second at the University of Alabama for head coach Nick Saban.

UA finished the 2011 football season with an 11-1 regular season record, having fallen to LSU at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Bama failed to reach the SEC Championship Game as a result of that one loss, with the honor going to the Tigers.

Bama was able to enter the championship game as a result of all other undefeated teams falling to losses in the last couple of weeks of the season. So a rematch was in place for the 2012 BCS National Championship Game at the New Orleans, Louisiana Superdome.

The Crimson Tide left no doubt in the rematch as to who was the superior football team. Alabama shut out LSU 21-0 to capture the 2011 title.

More accolades coming to Alabama sports. This one going to men's tennis.

The U.S. Open National Playoff/Men's Sectional Qualifying Doubles Championship held at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Florida was captured by Bama sophomore Korey Lovett and former number one UA player Ricky Doverspike, according to RollTide.com. They report that Lovett also advanced to the singles final where he was unfortunately edged out in three straight sets.

The duo won all three of their matches in straight sets, and then dropped only one game in their second match. They then took the finals over John and Bill Cook 6-0, 6-2.
