TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – The number is 23. A big number. A really big number.

The University of Alabama Crimson Tide softball team last night posted its 23rd shutout of the season. In a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening in Tuscaloosa at Rhoads Stadium, the Crimson Tide defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 2-0. These 23 shutouts are the most for Bama softball since 2009, and now the Tide needs just three more to reach the single-season record.

For the third-consecutive week, Alabama (37-9) posted a midweek shutout. The defense was dominating, and the pitching, as usual, was great. Madi Moore (5-1) picked up the UA victory going 6.1 innings and allowing only three hits. Sydney Littlejohn then entered the contest to secure the final two outs, earning Littlejohn her first save of the season.

Following the Wednesday victory, Alabama Crimson Tide softball head coach Patrick Murphy said, "We wanted to give Madi a shot. She's done well. Back-to-back shutouts, we'll take that all day long. She follows the lead of Sydney [Littlejohn] and Alexis [Osorio]. It's been our key to success all year. Our pitchers always give us a good shot to win, and Madi did that [Wednesday night]."

Following the loss, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles fall to 24-23 on the season.

"It was a good game all-around defensively," Murphy commented. "Sydney Booker made some great plays, Merris Schroder had a diving catch in foul territory and Madi helped herself with some spin moves with the ball hugging the line. That's a tough play for a lefty. Stephanie VanBrakle Prothro's goal for Madi tonight was to make them put it in play and we made the plays behind her."

Bailey Hemphill, Chandler Dare and Sydney Booker all went one-for-three on the night, with Dare picking up one RBI for the Tide. Peyton Grantham was one-for-two on Wednesday.

Next for Alabama, the Crimson Tide will host the ninth-ranked Washington Huskies (31-10) for two games on Friday, April 21st at 6 p.m. CT and Saturday, April 22nd at 4:30 p.m. CT.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama men's and women's track & field teams will face off with the Auburn Tigers on the Plains this weekend to compete in the War Eagle Invitational on April 21-22 at Auburn University.

The UA men's team finished fourth this week for the third consecutive week while the women are ranked 20th in the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) National Team Rankings. The men's team racked up 220.26 points while the women's team picked up 94.75 points. Regionally, the men are ranked first in the South region for the second week in a row, while the women are third.

Alabama track & field head coach Dan Waters said, "Last weekend was a good trip for us. We had a number of personal-bests and top-10 performances and got a taste of high-level competition as well. We've got some work to do as we start to move closer to the championship portion of the schedule so these next two weeks will be important for us. I like where we are as a team right now, we just need to continue to improve from meet to meet."

In-State QB James Foster Chooses Missouri

Once calling the offer from Alabama football a "dream offer," Montgomery's Sidney Lanier High School 2018 dual-threat quarterback James Foster announced on Wednesday via his Twitter account that he has committed to Missouri.

The 6' 3", 210-pound Foster received an offer from Alabama on March 25th. Foster also held other SEC offers from Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and Mississippi State. He had previously committed to North Carolina in 2015.

Foster is rated a three-star recruit and the No. 17 dual-threat quarterback in the nation, according to the 247Sports Composite. In an interview with the Montgomery Advertiser-Journal, Foster said, "I'll have an opportunity to play early there. I have a great bond with (offensive coordinator) coach (Josh) Heupel. Everything about the school is wonderful from the players and coaches to the people."
