Alabama Softball Shuts Out Southern Miss
_____
Crimson Tide Blanks Golden Eagles 2-0
The University of Alabama Crimson Tide softball team last night posted its 23rd shutout of the season. In a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening in Tuscaloosa at Rhoads Stadium, the Crimson Tide defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles 2-0. These 23 shutouts are the most for Bama softball since 2009, and now the Tide needs just three more to reach the single-season record.
For the third-consecutive week, Alabama (37-9) posted a midweek shutout. The defense was dominating, and the pitching, as usual, was great. Madi Moore (5-1) picked up the UA victory going 6.1 innings and allowing only three hits. Sydney Littlejohn then entered the contest to secure the final two outs, earning Littlejohn her first save of the season.
Following the Wednesday victory, Alabama Crimson Tide softball head coach Patrick Murphy said, "We wanted to give Madi a shot. She's done well. Back-to-back shutouts, we'll take that all day long. She follows the lead of Sydney [Littlejohn] and Alexis [Osorio]. It's been our key to success all year. Our pitchers always give us a good shot to win, and Madi did that [Wednesday night]."
Following the loss, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles fall to 24-23 on the season.
"It was a good game all-around defensively," Murphy commented. "Sydney Booker made some great plays, Merris Schroder had a diving catch in foul territory and Madi helped herself with some spin moves with the ball hugging the line. That's a tough play for a lefty. Stephanie VanBrakle Prothro's goal for Madi tonight was to make them put it in play and we made the plays behind her."
Bailey Hemphill, Chandler Dare and Sydney Booker all went one-for-three on the night, with Dare picking up one RBI for the Tide. Peyton Grantham was one-for-two on Wednesday.
Next for Alabama, the Crimson Tide will host the ninth-ranked Washington Huskies (31-10) for two games on Friday, April 21st at 6 p.m. CT and Saturday, April 22nd at 4:30 p.m. CT.
