University of Alabama senior guard RETIN OBASOHAN has been named the 2016 Southeastern Conference Scholar Athlete of the year as well as First Team All-SEC. The league office made the announcement yesterday. That, however, is not all. Additionally the young man from Antwerp, Belgium has been named to the SEC's all-defensive team to walk away with triple-honors as he closes out his senior campaign with the Crimson Tide.
Alabama head basketball coach AVERY JOHNSON was exuberant in his praise for Obasohan saying, "I'm so proud of Retin. I got word yesterday and was just really excited for him. I
couldn’t wait to tell him (Tuesday). I wanted to be the first one to
tell him. Obviously, he couldn’t get all-defensive [Team] and been on
the First Team without his teammates. His teammates do a lot to help him
on the floor, but it’s well deserved. [It’s] well earned. Scholar
Athlete of the Year, that’s back-to-back [Levi Randolph won the award in
2015]. It’s pretty amazing stuff. I’m just honored to be his coach and
work with him, just like the rest of our guys, day-in and day-out. He’s
definitely had a tremendous leap this year. He’s not finished."
This now makes three players in Bama basketball history to claim the SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year honor. Besides Obasohan, former Bama basektballers LEVI RANDOLPH (2015) and JUSTIN KNOX (2009) were recipients of the award. Obasohan is only the second player in program history to be named to both the SEC's first team and all-defensive team in the same season. TREVOR RELEFORD was the only other to do it back in 2013.
Obasohan said, "It's far beyond anything I could possibly imagine. It blows
my mind still. It’s so surreal. It kind of seemed like a dream. I’m
just grateful for the guys I have in that locker room, the coaching
staff that I have and the God that I serve. It’s pretty unreal and I’m
excited to even add some more great stuff to this season."
Obasohan ranks third in the SEC with an average of 20.6 points per game.

The Alabama Crimson Tide softball team decimated Samford last night at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa in 10-0 shutout in front of a home crowd and national television audience.
It took until the third inning for the Bama bats to begin connecting, but when they did they relentless continued to beat Samford into submission. Alabama (21-2) scored four runs in that third and followed it up with another six runs in the fourth inning to take a huge 10-run lead in the contest over Samford (11-8). This, of course, brought the game to a conclusion in just over 90 minutes because of the run-rule.
Tide bats were banging as five of the Tide's nine hits were extra-base hits, including a big three-run triple by DEMI TURNER. It was ANDREA HAWKINS going 2-2 with two RBIs and scoring two runs that raised her season average to a phenomenal .471.
Taking her eighth victory in the circle, SYDNEY LITTLEJOHN (8-2) threw a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits and one walk. Mollie Hanson took the loss for the Bulldogs.
Next up for the Crimson Tide will be the SEC opener against No. 6/4 LSU (21-2) in Baton Rouge. The first game will be Friday, March 11th at 6 p.m. CT. Game two will be played on Saturday, March 12th at 5 p.m. CT and game three is Sunday, March 13th at 2 p.m. CT. Games two and three will air on the SEC Network with Jenn Hildreth and Michele on the call.
