What a way to end the old year and begin the new year.
Winning!
The University of Alabama posts a big win in college football with a semifinal victory on the last day of 2015, then the basketball team comes in on day two of the new year and starts it off with a big win.
The Alabama Crimson Tide men's basketball team (9-3) started 2016 with a 68-49 win over Norfolk State yesterday afternoon at Coleman Coliseum to end the non-conference portion of its regular season. This was Alabama's 15th consecutive non-conference victory in Coleman Coliseum. It was a dominating performance by the Tide before beginning the SEC-portion of the schedule.
Alabama's senior guard RETIN OBASOHAN tied his career-high in scoring with 23 points, hitting 9-of-12 from the floor, with 3-of-6 of those coming from beyond the arc. He also had a season-high four steals on the afternoon. This was his third 20-point game of the 2015-16 season.
Also scoring in double-figures for the Crimson Tide was senior guard ARTHUR EDWARDS who matched his career high five, three-point baskets to pump in 15 points. Sophomore RILEY NORRIS came in from off the bench to put up 10 points himself, along with eight rebounds.
MICHAEL KESSENS led the team in rebounds with nine, followed by Norris with eight, JIMMIE TAYLOR with seven, Obasohan and DONTA HALL with three each. with Edwards and SHANNON HALE with one each.
Alabama was 22-of-48 (45.8%) from the field, including 11-of-24 (45.8%) from three-point land. The Tide was 13-of-17 (76.5%) in free throws. The Tide out-rebounded Norfolk State 36-29.
Head coach AVERY JOHNSON said, "We're excited that we were able to finish up our non-conference schedule with a victory. We had a positive performance tonight led by the two guys that are here (Arthur Edwards and Retin Obasohan). Arthur Edwards continues to be consistent on both ends. Retin Obasohan had an amazing performance today on both ends of the floor, specifically defensively...the way he defended their best player. It was just great leadership from both of these men and our guys have accepted responsibility in trying to improve their individual performances while trying to help us win as a team.
"We have a long way to go offensively. We had 13 assists and 13 turnovers, some careless turnovers, but we'll continue to get better. Another Stellar defensive effort from our team."
Bama begins the SEC portion of its schedule this Thursday, January 7th in Oxford, Mississippi when they take on the Ole Miss Rebels. Game time is 8 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
