Greatest Names In Bama Football History
A. J. McCarron

Every Alabama football fan is familiar with this one. He's one of the most recent "memorable names" out of UA. Former University of Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron truly is one of the greatest names in Bama football history.

A.J. McCarron was born September 13, 1990 and was raised in Mobile, Alabama. He attened Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic School from kindergarten through the fourth grade before transferring to St. Paul's Episcopal School. McCarron was severely injured in a jet-ski accident and almost died.

His first football experience came playing at Trimmier Park and then Langan Park in Mobile. St. Paul went 14-1 during McCarron's junior season, and went on to win the state championship against Briarwood Christian School. While attending St. Paul's, McCarron was recruited by several football programs in the Southeastern Conference, including Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi and Tennessee. He commited to play for the Alabama Crimson Tide on May 3, 2008, becoming the only quarterback signed by Alabama for their 2009 recruiting class. His final high school football game came in the 2009 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.

In McCarron's freshman year at UA he accepted a redshirt and didn't play at all that season. The Tide went 14-0 that year and won the National Championship.

Quarterback battles have occurred regularly at Alabama, and McCarron found himself in a battle with Phillip Sims for the starting quarterback job against Kent State in the season-opener in 2011. He started every game after that.

In his first college start, McCarron passed for 226 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions as Alabama won the contest 48-7. His first SEC win came against 14th-ranked Arkansas 38-14.

During his sophomore season, McCarron led the Tide to an 11-1 regular season record, including a 7-1 conference record. Bama's only loss came at the hands of LSU, ranked number one, in a 6-9 overtime game. Of course as all know, Bama met LSU again for the National Championship at the Superdome, totally dominating the Tigers 21-0.

In all, McCarron was a part of three National Championship teams under head football coach Nick Saban. They were in 2009, 2011, and 2012. He is one of only seven quarterbacks in history to win back-to-back consensus  national championships in the BCS era.

During his junior season, McCarron threw for a school-record 30 touchdown passes in a single season, as well as a total of 49 touchdown passes over his career. He was named winner of the 2012 CFPA Quarterback Trophy on January 22, 2013.

As a senior in 2013, McCarron was again a second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection. During that season he passed John Parker Wilson to become Alabama's all-time passing yardage leader. He also broke the record for passing yards in a single season,  held by Greg McElroy, with 3,063 yards.

McCarron was drafteed by the Cincinnati Bengals of the NFL where he plays today.

DT Prospect Michail Carter Likes Alabama

Jackson High School defensive tackle prospect Michail Carter may not have his Top-5 or 10 picked out yet, but he is definitely sure of two schools that he will be officially visiting, and the University of Alabama is one of those two schools. He has already received 12 offers, most of which are from the ACC and SEC.

Jackson is listed in the Scout 300 and is getting plenty of interest from numerous schools. He is a 6' 3", 311-11 pound four-star player, and listed at No. 27 in his position according to Scout, and the No. 6 defensive tackle out of the state of Georgia.  He's strong, smart, powerful and would fit nicely with the Bama philosophy.

QBs A Little Sloppy In Wednesday Practice

The University of Alabama football team put in another two hours yesterday afternoon in preparation for Saturday's season-opening contest with the Wisconsin Badgers.  The Crimson Tide worked out in full pads inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility.

Wide receiver Cam Sims has been cleared by the medical staff, is able to practice, but is still in limbo as to whether he will actually play in Saturday's game. Cyrus Jones has gotten in a few reps on offensive, so we may see him on both sides of the ball Saturday. Jones was a wide receiver as a freshman before moving to the cornerback slot. Saban says it's possible "at some point" Jones could be seen as a receiver again.

All the quarterbacks worked out yesterday, in pretty much the same rotation as all week.  No determination has yet been made, according to head coach Nick Saban, as to who the starting QB will be. One thing to come out of practice was that the quarterback play yesterday was pretty sloppy, according to AL.com. From one week to the next various quarterbacks have been named as "having an advantage" until it probably doesn't mean that much anymore. Regardless, expect that two quarterbacks, at least, will get some playing time this Saturday.

The coaches and players narrowed their focus even further on the offensive and defensive schemes to use  in this Saturday's contest. This was the next-to-last practice before heading to Arlington, Texas for the opener. Game time is set for 7 p.m. CT on ABC television.

Today's practice will be at 3:30 p.m. CT, then Friday the Tide will make it's way to Texas tomorrow.

Wide Receiver Cam Sims Cleared To Play

Alabama's injured sophomore wide receiver Cam Sims has been cleared to play by the Alabama medical staff, according to head football coach Nick Saban. But Saban went on to say, yesterday, that a decision has not been made as whether or not to play Sims in Saturday's season-opener with Wisconsin. Saban said, "I think that's a decision that I'd like to make with him, even though he's been cleared medically. Sims suffered a torn ACL and LCL in late March and has made a remarkable recovery.

The staff has been monitoring Sims very closely, and, according to Saban, Sims is getting "very close" to full speed.
