Saban Emphasizes Turnovers

With fall practice in full swing, and Alabama head football coach Nick Saban holding regular press conferences, we're able to get important tidbits of his focus and direction for this year's team. During the past couple of days he ha spoken of the need for the defense to get back to what it once was, a dominate force with which other teams had to deal. And one of the things needed, according to the head man, is to get back to taking the ball away from opponents.

Saban said, “The last couple of years we have not done very well in turnovers. We had a minus-two turnover ratio last year for a team that won 12 games—almost unheard of.”

Coach has been working the defensive unit, both spring and now the fall camp, in going after the ball. Every year the coaches "teach" the art of stripping the ball, proper coverages for defensive backs to make a pick, and understanding their defensive scheme as opposed to the offensive scheme being used by their opponents in order to place themelves in the proper position to make the play...but this season it has become a priority.

Defensive end A'Shawn Robinson said that turnover drills have become a bigger part of practice for this coming season. He said,“Stripping at the ball, running backs falling to the ground, trying to strip the ball.

Alabama football has seen a steady decline in turnover statistics, culminating in an 11th-place Southeastern Conference finish in turnover margin. The Crimson Tide came in 71st nationally. One can see how Saban's renewed focus on the defense being more turnover-conscience has come about. More than one player for the Tide has mentioned that teams aren't afraid to play Alabama anymore, and that their goal is to once again instill the mystique, the fear that teams once had for them.

“One of the things that we’ve tried to establish with our players is creating and establishing an identity as a team when it comes to toughness, effort, relentless competitive spirit,” Saban said. “How we compete in games. There’s some major areas that we need to emphasize.

“And we gave up too many big plays. That’s something we need to work on. We need to do a better job getting off the field on third down, and we need to play with a lot more discipline on special teams so that we can take advantage of some of the great skill guys that we have.”

Getting Bama's defense back to where it was, and continuing to improve on offense as we have seen the past couple of years, will definitely give teams a reason to once again dread the week that the Alabama Crimson Tide comes up on their schedule. It never hurts to have a team line up against you thinking, "How can we beat these guys?" as opposed to, "We can beat these guys."

Put together the mental toughness with the physical, Bama will again be feared.

Corey McCarron Back At UA

Corey McCarron transferred at the end of the 2014 season after graduating. He then enrolled at Middle Tennessee State University and began practice with his new team this week. And come September 12th, McCarron will once again enter Bryant-Denny stadium. Only this time not as friend, but as foe. Bama hosts McCarron and MTSU for a 3 PM game on that date.

Corey, younger brother of A.J. McCarron, left the Capstone upon graduation, but it was never announced he left nor that he still had another year of eligibility.

If you recall, Corey transferred to Alabama from South Alabama after the 2011 season hoping to play tight end to older brother, the quarterback. He saw only limited action in 2013 and 2014.
