As we continue to look at the names that stand out in the storied history of University of Alabama football, we move now to one that probably is known by most every Bama fan, Lee Roy Jordan.
Jordan was born on April 27, 1941 in Excel in Monroe County, Alabama. He played linebacker for UA from 1960 to 1962, then went on to a career in the National Football League as a linebacker with the Dallas Cowboys from 1963 to 1976.
In his sophomore season in 1960 with the Tide, Jordan helped Bama to an 8-2-1 record. They finished the year with a 3-3 tie with the University of Texas at Austin in the Bluebonnet Bowl. Jordan was named Most Valuable Player of the game.
Jordan's junior season saw the Crimson Tide going 11-0 during the regular season, as well as winning the national championship.
His final season with the Tide saw Jordan as a first team All-American and helped his team to a 10-1 record. Bama defeated Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl that year, and Jordan was named outstanding player of the game with 31 tackles in the 17-0 win.
