Alabama Football Defeats Mississippi State In Nail-Biter

STARKVILLE, Mississippi – It was an "unreal" Saturday for the top teams in the country. The top-ranked Georgia Bulldogs suffered a huge defeat at the hands of the Auburn Tigers and the Miami Hurricanes blew away the third-ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The only thing stopping the second-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide making it a trifecta was Bama sophomore quarterback Jalen Hurts connecting with freshman wide receiver DeVonta Smith for a 26-yard game-winning touchdown with 25 seconds left in the game as the University of Alabama managed to edge No. 16 Mississippi State 31-24 in a see-saw battle at Davis Wade Stadium Saturday night.
Following the game Hurts commented, "We did a good job of staying together, being one and staying cool and calm. We did enough."
Concerning the hard-fought game last night, University of Alabama football head coach Nick Saban said, "Sometimes you need hard," Saban said. "If we're going to beat really good teams, if we're going to compete, we've got to learn how to compete in close games where every play counts. Where you've got to play every play for 60 minutes."
With the win, Alabama improves to 10-0 overall, and 7-0 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Bulldogs now fall to 7-3 on the season and 3-3 in SEC play. The Crimson Tide now has ten consecutive wins over its SEC Western Division foe.
Leading the UA offense with 282 total yards was Jalen Hurts. He was 10-of-19 passing for 242 yards, as well as tossing the game-winning touchdown pass, and rushing for 40 yards on 19 carries and a touchdown. Junior wide receiver Calvin Ridley had five receptions for 171 yards, just three yards short of tying his career-high. Last night's contest was Ridley's seventh career 100-yard game.
Defensively it was Bama senior defensive back Hootie Jones leading the Tide with a career-high 10 tackles and one pass breakup. Senior linebacker Rashaan Evans contributed nine tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack.
The Crimson Tide is now in the midst of its second-longest SEC regular game win streak with 22 consecutive victories. The streak dates all the way back to October 3, 2015, a 38-10 win at Georgia. Bama's last SEC loss came at the hands of the Ole Miss Rebels on September 19, 2015 with a score of 43-37. UA football's longest SEC win streak is 27 games from 1976-80.
Last night's contest with the Bulldogs was University of Alabama football head coach Nick Saban's 60th career game coaching Alabama as the Associated Press No. 1 team, the most games coached as No. 1 at one school. Saban is 54-6 (.900), and has won more games coaching as the No. 1 team at one school than any other coach in college football history. Tied for second are Woody Hayes (Ohio State) and Bobby Bowden (Florida State) with 40 wins apiece. Bowden was 40-5 at Florida State as No. 1 and Hayes went 40-6 with Ohio State.
Alabama football's school record consecutive games scoring streak was extended to 223 games against Mississippi State last night. Jalen Hurts was able to take the ball across the goal line on a one-yard touchdown run on the Tide's second possession. The current streak began after Bama was held scoreless in a 9-0 loss to Auburn back on November 18, 2000.
Alabama will next host Mercer at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday, November 18th. The contest will be broadcast live on the SEC Network starting at 11 a.m. CT.

Southeastern Conference Football Scores
The No. 1 team in the nation went down on Saturday night to a team from the state of Alabama. Only it was the Auburn Tigers that rolled up a newspaper and mercilessly swatted the bottom of the Dawgs from Georgia 40-17. The Dogs of Mississippi State took the number two team in the nation right down to the wire before the Alabama Crimson Tide managed to pull off a 31-24 win in Starkville last night. The top 2 teams in the nation, who also lead their respective divisions in the Southeastern Conference had a very tough night.
The only other ranked team from the SEC pulled out a big win. LSU easily handled Arkansas by a 33-10 score. If Butch Jones wasn't gone before, he is sure to be now as the Missouri Tigers humiliated the Volunteers of Tennessee 50-17. It seems the fans are all volunteering to move Jones as far from Knoxville as possible.
Ole Miss stepped out of conference to waylay Louisiana 50-22, and South Carolina showed it wasn't the former head coach holding the Florida Gators back by wrestling the Gators to a 28-20 decision.
Here are the scores of Saturday's SEC games:
1 Georgia 17 10 Auburn 40
2 ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE 31 16 Mississippi State 24
24 LSU 33 Arkansas 10
Kentucky 44 Vanderbilt 21
Texas A&M 55 New Mexico 14
Missouri 50 Tennessee 17
Ole Miss 50 Louisiana 22
South Carolina 28 Florida 20
