Minkah Takes Home The Hardware,
Wins Chuck Bednarik & Jim Thorpe Awards

University of Alabama football's Minkah Fitzpatrick

ATLANTA, Georgia – He has been ferocious on the football field, a true scholar in the classroom and gracious in his receiving of honor. University of Alabama football junior defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick was presented with a pair of prestigious individual national awards on Thursday night at the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The awards presentations took place at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.

Fitzpatrick received and is taking home some hefty hardware from last night's awards presentation, both the Chuck Bednarik and Jim Thorpe awards. The Bednarik Award recognizes the nation's top defensive player while the Thorpe Award is presented annually to college football's top defensive back. Fitzpatrick is the second Alabama Crimson Tide player to receive both of these awards. Jonathan Allen won the 2016 Bednarik Award while Antonio Langham received the Thorpe Award back in 1993.

Only three players have ever won both the Bdnarik and Thorpe awards in the same season. In addition to Fitzpatrick, Michigan's Charles Woodson did son in 1997 while LSU's Patrick Peterson took home both honors in 2010.

NASHVILLE, Tenness – It was a runaway victory. The score wasn't very close, but the game itself didn't seem as close as the score. The University of Alabama women's basketball team outscored Lipscomb in a lopsided fashion in the paint to the tune of 40-6, and then went on to out-rebound its hosts 50-26. All of this earned the Crimson Tide a 73-51 road win on Thursday night in Nashville, Tennessee over the Lady Bisons.

Bama women's head coach Kristy Curry said, "Any win on the road is a great win. I feel like we showed a lot of toughness by out-rebounding them 50-26 and going 17-of-21 at the free throw line.  Every time they made a run by hitting a deep and contested three, our kids just stayed the course, I loved our toughness and togetherness."

The Alabama (5-3) bench also held a huge lead in bench scoring on Thursday night. Bama's bench doubled the Lady Bisons' (2-8) bench 44-22.

Pouring in a season-high 16 points, UA women's basketball senior Coco Knight led the way for the Tide. She hit on 7-of-10 from the floor, to go along with a career-high four assists off the Bama bench.  Sophomore Ashley Knight and senior Ashley Williams both knocked down 14 points apiece, while sophomore Jordan Lewis contributed 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds.

The domination didn't stop there. From the free throw line the Tide converted on 17-of-21 attempts (81%), including 13-of-15 (87%) in the second half.

This Sunday, December 10th, Alabama will host Grambling State at 2 p.m. CT in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  The game will air live on SEC Network+.

ATLANTA, Georgia – The only thing at rolls like the Crimson Tide are the honors that just keep rolling in for individual members of The University of Alabama football team. Junior defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick and senior center Bradley Bozeman were named to the 2017 Walter Camp All-America Team. The announcement was made on Thursday evening by the Walter Camp Foundation.

Named to the Walter Camp first team was Minkah Fitzpatrick while Bozeman was named to the second team. This is Fitzpatrick's second selection to the nation's oldest All-America team, with the first being a second-team pick in 2016. This is the first selection for Bozeman.

Earlier on Thursday, Fitzpatrick, Bozeman and junior defensive back Ronnie Harrison were revealed as honorees on the Sports Illustrated All-America Team. Fitzpatrick was a first-team choice while Bozeman and Harrison were named to the second team.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – The University Alabama football program is not only one of the very best in the nation, but also in the classroom as well. Alabama football is among seven recipients of the 2017 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Academic Achievement Award, the first for the Crimson Tide. The announcement was made by the association on Thursday.

Alabama is one of seven programs that recorded a 100-percent graduation rate for members of its 2010 freshman football class, an outstanding fete indeed. Joining Bama as honorees this year are Cincinnati, Middle Tennessee, Northwestern, Utah, Utah State and Virginia.

The Academic Achievement Award is presented annually to the school or schools with the highest score in the NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and a federal graduation rate of 75 percent or higher.

The GSR is based on a six-year graduation window for student-athletes and was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately assess the academic success of student-athletes. The GSR holds institutions accountable for transfer students, unlike the federal graduation rate. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees.

The Academic Achievement Award was created by the College Football Association (CFA) in 1981 and presented by that organization until its dissolution in 1997. The AFCA has presented the award since 1998.
