TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - It seems every summer we wind up with a member of the University of Alabama football being arrested. This summer is no different. Crimson Tide senior defensive lineman Da'Shawn Hand was arrested this morning on charges of driving under the influence, according to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office. While details are not available at the present time, Hand has been released on $1,000 bond. An update will be made when more information surfaces.
University of Alabama head football coach Nick Saban issued a statement, saying, "This type of behavior is not acceptable and we are disappointed in Da'Shawn's actions. We are still gathering information and will evaluate what we need to d in terms of appropriate discipline as we move forward, so better choices and decisions can be made in the future."
Hand was named as a preseason All-Southeastern Conference first-team selection. In 2016 he registered 21 tackles and two sacks as a backup. The former five-star was expected to step into a starting position, most likely defensive end.

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – It has been announced that the University of Alabama football team's annual Fan Day has been scheduled for Saturday, August 5th, just about a week away. An open practice will be held at Bryant-Denny Stadium that Saturday from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Players and coaches will be available for autographs following practice on the field, slated to begin at approximately 4:45 p.m CT.
Be on hand at the gate at 1 p.m., because the first 150 fans in line at Gate 25 will receive numbered color-coded wristbands for early entrance to the post-practice autograph session. Fans receiving wristbands will need to report to Gate 25 (South field entrance) at 4 p.m. to begin lining up for the autograph session.
Fans will be allowed to enter the stadium beginning at 1:30 p.m. through gates 9 and 19 and occupy the west side lower bowl (sections A-N). The open practice, scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start, should last approximately two hours. For security purposes, all items are subject to inspection as fans enter the stadium for both the practice and Fan Day activities.
The Crimson Tide football team, coaching staff and head coach Nick Saban will be available for autographs on the field for approximately 45 minutes following the end of the practice session. The gate to the field will be open once the autograph session has been set up. In an effort to facilitate as many autographs in the time allowed, fans will be limited to one item per person for autographs, and no posed photographs will be permitted.
Concessions vendors will be walking through the stadium with items for sale, plus the concession stands on the west side (field and mezzanine levels) will be open as well. Alabama merchandise will also be sold on Saturday and 3,000 autograph posters will be given away.
Concerning the parking situation, fans are directed to the west ten Hoor area of campus. There are two parking decks as well as surface lots that will be available. Parking for persons with disabilities is available on a first come, first served basis in the Communications Lot and Wallace Wade Lots. No special accommodations will be made for recreational vehicles (RVs) on campus. All RVs should park at the Northington Lot near University Mall.
Should inclement weather arise, the Fan Day portion of the afternoon would be moved to the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility. Any weather-related changes will be shared through the official Alabama Athletics and Alabama Football social media accounts.

How The University Of Alabama Got Its Mascot
Big AL
University Of Alabama Mascot

Big AL has been around for quite some time now. The University of Alabama sport mascot, an elephant named Big AL, is beloved by Crimson Tide fans of all ages. Everyone, young and old, wants their picture taken with the country's most famous elephant.
So did you ever wonder how the University of Alabama ended up with an elephant as its mascot? The majority of Bama fans know, or have an idea, but how about the newbies? Or others who just like trivia? Let's delve into how Big AL came to be.
We must go back to the 1930 football season when Wallace Wade was the head coach of the Alabama football team. Coach Wade has recruited and coached up a great football team that season. On October 4th of that year the varsity squad took the field to battle the Ole Miss Rebels. Everett Strupper, Atlanta Journal sportswriter, was amazed at the size of the Bama boys as they began play. In his column the following week he wrote, "...the earth started to tremble, there was a distant rumble that continued to grow. Some excited fan in the stands bellowed , 'Hold your horses, the elephants are coming,' and out stamped this Alabama varsity...men that I had seen play last year looking like they had nearly doubled in size."
From that season game on Strupper and other sports writers continued referring to the Alabama linemen as "Red Elephants." The red, of course, alluding to the crimson color of their jerseys.
And how did that 1930 Alabama football team fare? They posted a 10-0 record while shutting out eight of their opponents and only allowed 13 points for the entire season. That squad went to the Rose Bowl, rolling over Washington State 24-0 and declared National Champions.
Now you know.
