It may have been a low-scoring affair, but still the Alabama Crimson Tide women's basketball team (14-9, 3-7 SEC) came away with a 48-37 victory over the Ole Miss Rebels (14-9, 2-7 SEC) last night in Foster Auditorium. Bama's defense really steppped up, holding the Rebs to the second lowest number of points since March 6, 2013 when the Tide held Mississippi State to just 36 in the SEC Tournament.
Tide head coach KRISTY CURRY said, "We did a great job there executing in the first part of the game and getting some great looks, and then kind of went away from who we needed to be. We kept trying to talk at media timeouts and get them settled down a little bit. We kind of panicked there, you know, at times, but we stayed the course, stuck with the game plan and showed some maturity and character. I just thought character won the second half. I'm so happy for our kids."
Alabama was only able to knock down four field goals in the first quarter, but made up for it at the foul line adding seven points giving them a 15-9 lead by quarter's end. Johnny, or Jonette Reb, was able to tie the score in the second period at 15-15 after Bama shooting went a little cold. Sophomore MEOSHONTI KNIGHT was able to pump in a free throw to again give Bama a one-point lead. Both clubs were unable to buy a bucket for two and a half minutes, but then Ole Miss was able to sink a trey to take their first lead of the evening 18-16. Little scoring occurred before the end of the half, and the two teams headed into the locker rooms tied 20-20.
In the first half the Tide was 6-of-18 from the floor while turning the ball over 13 times. The Rebels were 8-for-29.
Bama was able to get a handle on things in the third period. The Tide began sinking baskets to outscore the Rebs 18-7. Though Ole Miss hit the opening basket to take the lead 24-22, the Tide went on an 8-1 run to take the lead 30-25. The Rebels did manage to pull within three points during the quarter after that, but Bama ended the quarter with its largest lead of the game 38-27.
Meoshonti Knight commented, "I feel like we kind of calmed down a little bit. We were more poised. We converted on the offensive end. We got shots, more rebounds. We took it in, and we took our time offensively and, we got more shots."
In the fourth the Rebels were never able to get any closer than nine points, and that was after the first shot of the final frame. They were never within single digits again to threaten the Tide. The Rebels were only 5-of-29 in that final quarter, including just 1-of-9 from behind the arc.
Alabama was 15-of-41 (36.6 percent) on the night with 41 rebounds. Ole Miss was 13-of-58 (22.4 percent) with 39 rebounds.
Leading the scoring for the Crimson Tide was Meoshonti Knight with 14 points. HANNAH COOK was next with 12 points, followed by NIKKI HEGSTETTER with nine points, KARYLA MIDDLEBROOK with five points and SHAQUERA WADE and QUANETRIA BOLTON with four points each.
Hegstetter led the Tide in rebounds with 10, followed by Cook with nine, Middlebrook with five and Knight with four. Wade and Hayden brought down 3 rebounds each, Bolton had two and KHADIJAH CARTER brought down one rebound.
Alabama hosts Auburn at Foster Auditorium this Sunday, February 7th. Tip off is 1 p.m. CT and will air live on the SEC Network.
